Colony: Berry MoonThis cat is telling the history of something. What is it and how do they portray it?Gathered around the gentle old cat was a squirming mass of young kits, ears pricked to every word the old man uttered. There was almost complete silence from them, the only interruptions being squeaks and grumbles when one wriggled into another. “...and that, my dears, was how the universe was created. Now, what do you little fluffballs want to hear next?” The old cat chuckled. There was quiet chattering among the gathering in front of him before a tiny voice squeaked up from the back, “Um.. Mr. Ent? Could you tell us the one about the birth of dreams, please?”
Ent nodded, a smile spreading across his face. He cleared his throat. “Of course, little one. Now… Where do I begin? Ah yes,” his voice lost its quiet and gentle tone, gaining confidence and pride. He seemed to revel in letting the young in on the ‘secret’ myths and legends he knew and always told them as if they were a forbidden piece of knowledge he shouldn’t be sharing. “The sleeping world was once dark and dull, not a single spark of a dream, not a single whisper of anything except pure unconsciousness. There was no magic, there was no such thing as fantasy or imagination. The world was dull, the world was boring. The world was rather plain.
But one young kit did not like the eerie silence or the uncomfortable emptiness of sleep. This little kit sat awake most nights, fear fighting the need to sleep away. And one chilly night as he sat beneath falling flakes of snow, he dared to ask the beings from beyond one simple question. ‘Why is sleep so dark and scary?’ the little kit asked. He got no answer. Day came and went and the kit asked again, ‘Why is sleep so empty?’. Again, no answer. His faith in the beliefs his ancestors had held for centuries was wavering.
On the third night, just as he settled down, staring up at the stars, an answer came before he could open his mouth. ‘Little kit, sleep does not need to be scary, empty or silent. You can make magical worlds filled with creatures you would never see in your realm all with your own head. Do not be afraid to let your mind wander into the more irrational places. Let your creativity, your imagination, be free.’ And so, the kit did. From that night on the eerie blackness behind his eyes was replaced with stories and wonder and fun. He shared his new knowledge with his siblings and friends and soon they were running and playing, imagining increasingly impossible scenarios as they went.
The new laughter and fun was contagious, even infecting the more serious members of the colony. Soon this new experience was known to everyone and the world gained a brand new shine. The little kit who was too afraid of nothingness was called Dream, which is why we call these fantasies ‘dreams’ today.” Ent looked around at the faces in front of him, each one wide with awe and dancing with their own imagination. He always loved letting them come up with the visuals to his stories, always leaving the details out of his descriptions. He smiled, “Run along now, kids, I hear your parents calling for you.”
