He was flying through the star lit sky, the breeze brushing against his black scales..He enjoyed flying in the night, since he was also a raven black and liked how beautiful the stars shone through the clouds.. ‘So, so beautiful..’ he would think, closing his eyes, absolutely mesmerized. Flying through clouds, his halo glowed to show his everlasting happiness, which seemed often to say the least. His eyes shone, reflecting off the stars.. He stared awed at the moon, wishing deeply that he could visit that massive..whatever it was. That was his dream, however over-the-top it may be. This night, though.. was absolutely perfect.

Standing on the edge of the cliff, I stared down, terrified. It was a looooong way down. What if I didn't catch the draft fast enough? Is this what baby birds feel like when they take their first flight?

"I'm going to gently push you off, and you're going to open your wings. The snow below will break your fall if you can't get it the first time." My mother stood behind me, her calm voice reassuring. I could do this! "3... 2..."

And then I was falling. The muscles in my back spasmed, and my wings flew out instinctively. They were weak though, and shook under the impact as I fell. No, I wouldn't fail! I straightened them as much as I could, grinding my teeth, and flapped once. Suddenly, everything was calm. I opened my eyes -wait, why were they closed?- and saw.... I was soaring! I couldn't believe I was doing it! I let out a laugh of excitement, my voice echoing back up to me from below.

"Momma, I did it! Look at me!" I cried, flapping a few more times to keep my elevation. My mother pulled up beside me, a wide grin on her face.

"You did it, my little songbird!" She beamed, her eyes sparkling in delight. "Let's practice landing, yeah?"

I nodded enthusiastically, ready to learn.

Hasloe’s favorite flight was during last years winter solstice as the rain pattered lightly against the trees and the sun shown bright through the misty sky. The cold breeze blowing gently across his wings. It gave off a gentle feeling of comfort and wistful hope that it would soon return in a later year. This was a feeling that brought Hasloe joy, for it wasn’t often that peace would overtake the stressful thoughts that burrowed in ones mind. Although he knows that if the solstice was as frequent as he wished, it would never feel as special as it did when it finally returned in the sky for a short visit. The wait would be worth it, it always was.
