Pearlkit stumbled out of the nursery. She was barely over half a moon old but had decided to explore. Her siblings were snoring away behind her, curled up with their fathers. What a bore they were - the warmth seemed to have made every cat lazy, not just Molluskkit. With a huge sigh, she settled down outside the den, bored. It was honestly just such a sleepy day. The boulders clustered at the side of camp were swarming with snoozing cats, including her new friend: Sealkit. She'd been kicked out of the nursery for making too much noise and disturbing Musselkit, who had been left in the clan overnight.
The fluffy white kit shook herself and hopped to her paws. There was a way to relieve her boredom - go and talk to Sealkit. She scampered over, grinning, and attempted to clamber onto the smooth rock. Her tiny paws scrabbled uselessly and she slid back down to the earth, grumbling. Sealkit let out a short laugh and led Pearlkit around the side.
'Look,' Sealkit explained. 'This is the best way up.' Pearlkit saw a smooth, earthy path; well worn by small paws. She trotted up it, and sat primly next to the other kit. Her eyes shone happily as she curled her tail carefully around her little white paws, her paw pads comfortable against the colder stone.
The two of them surveryed the camp for a while before Pearlkit succumbed to the mood of the weather and fell asleep. She snuggled up with Sealkit, purring, and only woke up when a loud scream shattered their peace. Cloudpelt, her father, was standing at the entrance to the nursery, staring at her and Sealkit. Was it him who had screamed? Pearlkit got up, and called over to him. 'Hi! You finally woke up!' she mewed in her shrill voice. Cloudpelt's eyes widened in horror and suddenly Pearlkit heard the sharp scrape of scales grinding on stone. She turned her head, and her odd blue eyes froze in shock as the snake lunged.
------
Pearlkit stirred in the mossy nest, her tail twitching weakly. There was something funny on her shoulder. She blinked the sleep out of her eyes and staggered to her paws. Sealkit was right there? Pearlkit smiled sleepily at the black tabby, who was looking immensly relieved.
'Where am I?' Pearlkit yawned.
'In the medicine den,' Sealkit mewed, not at all her usual perky self.
'Why? I feel fine, apart from this..' Pearlkit trailed off, staring at the cobwebs swathing her right shoulder. 'What happened?'
'This,' Sealkit said miserably, pointing to a limp shape at the side of the den. It was a snake. 'Apparently we disturbed it while it was sunbathing.. Your father killed it. Marigoldspark said you were lucky it's venom wasn't poisonous.'
