I opened my umbrella to the sky as I spotted dark clouds quickly swirling in. The wind picked up and kids around me rushed to their parents sides as they packed up from the park. I brushed my hair with my hand as I watched over the different groups leave in an orderly fashion.
A mother called out to me, asking if I needed a ride home. I turned her down as rain began to drizzle. She left me with her son quickly after that, not sparing a second glance towards me. I kicked my rainboots in sync as I sat in the swing waiting for the show to start.
Rain came heavy the second a car door slammed. I didn’t check to see if it was someone leaving or something coming but it didn’t matter. All that mattered was the rain. I jumped down from the swing and watched the rain. I strained my hearing in different directions, mulling over the different sounds the rain made against the park equipment.
All of it played together in a beautiful symphony, left only to be enjoyed by the few people who waited for it. I carefully walked the park, careful to not disturb my listening as I passed by the different areas until I reached the end of my walk. Where a pond rested in between trees as a figure sat watching.
I approached him carefully, inspecting him. His eyes were closed and he sat on a bench under a collection of leaves protecting most of him from the rain. He opened his eyes and turned his attention towards me as I got closer.
“It’s a pleasure to see you again, Junny.” He patted the spot beside him and I skipped over to it. I closed my umbrella, resting it over my lap whilst playing with one of the flaps on it. His demeanor was calming just like the storm and he spoke warmly while addressing me. I hadn’t considered calling him a friend until now, friends didn’t meet every time it rained. I wanted to fix that.
I had waited all month for a storm like this, working up my confidence. I practiced what I would say in my mind and executed it perfectly with others. What was it now that got me all choked up?
“Junny, I have to ask. It’s been rather boring only meeting you here once or twice every other month-” I perked up “Yes! Exactly, that’s why I need you to be my friend!!” I blurted out. He seemed shocked by this but smiled back anyways, laughing a little.
“I’m so glad to hear that then, it’s settled I suppose.” I got to my feet and pulled him out to join me. We gathered under my umbrella as I took his hand, starting to pull him towards my favourite spot to listen to the rain in. I had been waiting to share this with a friend so for long, and here he was.
