Sean does own a spaceship though! Well, it's actually just a speedy car modified with 'extra speed!' and other shiny junk, all painted and space-ified to match his glam outfit. Jerry is, surprisingly, just your average taxi driver. Sure, it may sound silly for someone who's full of gear to be one, but he enjoys being one at heart. His hearing is very weak, so his hearing aids help him alot when driving, especially when given the place he should drive the customer to. He's known to be pretty big on talk when driving, as he likes to chat once in a while instead of staying silent. His taxi car looks like an actual starship, you could say thanks to a kind person who helped him achieve this space-y look.

he’s a space racer, obviously. a dash between the stars, adrenaline pumping,
ship kicking into warp drive, laser guns that are only legal in the underground.

yea, the underground. where a head of electric blue hair wanders in and gets,
what, maybe a couple looks? a few sets of eyes following, two people thinking,
 hey, have i seen him before?

but in the loud atmosphere, smoky air, loud music, he doesn’t stand out, and
no one pays him much more than a second glance.


“pass me the wrench.” a tool is set into his hand. “the other wrench.”
“they’re the same wrench, benji.”
“but i like the other one better. she’s nicer.” he gets some rolled eyes and a
different wrench of the same make.

last night he hit a space rock. sore spine, probably okay. ship totaled. his
coworker could tell he was in a bad mood because he was breaking more than
he was fixing. and he was usually a great mechanic, almost as great as he was
a racer.

“dude, it’s no big deal, it’s just one race. i’ll help you fix your ship later if you
stop destroying this one. gotta get paid yunno.”

wrench against hard floor. the sort of clang benji wished he’d turned his hearing
aids off for, or alternatively wished he hadn’t tossed the wrench. “it’s not just
one race, it’s most of them.” his anger was delivered almost flatly. never did
show much emotion outside of when he was in a raceship. “these bastards cheat
all the time, there’s no integrity in it. i wouldn’t have crashed if they hadn’t
deliberately forced me against the rock.”

“it’s illegal racing, fool. anything goes. besides, you couldn’t live without the
laser guns. you’re cheating just as much.”

“lasers are fair play and official racing is bland without them!”

benji celestino ardin. nineteen. calm, hardworking, bilingual but forgets his own
name. the kind of doofus who sits in the back of class so his outspoken witty
comments aren’t heard by the teacher. an idiot, but one with a passion:

racing.

and sure he’s a prodigy, but that didn’t stop his license from slipping through his
fingers when he was caught illegally modding his ships. he argued that they were
safe. they argued otherwise.

but there was always the shop to fall back on. open since 13001, best service in
the galaxy! every customer served with a smile !

benji usually didn’t smile.

the inside of a ship was fascinating, and he loved to tinker and create. but a
mechanic’s job is just to fix the machine, not give it star powered engines. and a
delivery ship was. not a raceship. fundamentally the same but a lot less cool. a lot
less stuff to toy with. not. that he could toy with anything anyway. he learned that
when a customer came back asking why their ship had a “racing wings” option and
demanded a refund because he hit the button and was pulled over for the illegal
modding.

so, sure, he’s just a guy who gets paid for fixing ships — when he actually fixes
them anyway. sometimes androids too, or microwaves. says once you can fix cars,
you can fix anything. others don’t agree, but he won’t have it if you tell him it’s a
gift. “just had to fix a lot of stuff when i was a kid, i guess.”

just a mechanic. by day.

and illegal racer by night.

in which illegally racing might not be his job, but would be if he could win a race.
and he could definitely win a race, if the game wasn’t full of souped up ships
equipped with things that could easily kill a man. he’s good, he’s great even, but
he can’t win because he’s the very embodiment of being hit with a blue shell half
a second before the finish line, and suddenly you’re seventh place. he’s gaining
traction in popularity, but as the guy who Almost But Never Makes It.

the guy who almost but never makes it isn’t going to be the guy people bet on. he
doesn’t make a penny, totals his ship, dips into his funds to fix it, barely scrapes by
as a mechanic. his flat has a beat up couch and a bowl. and a spoiled guinea pig.
his pocket change buys him a copper ring from a toy gacha machine that turns his
finger green.

but the stars say his name might be a fan favorite someday. there’s appeal and
emotion in rooting for the underdog. and maybe, through the power of fans calling
his name, he’ll finally win, the way the power of friendship wins the final battle in
an anime.

well, in the end, it’s not the popularity or money he cares for. he’d love to eat more
than takeout martian food, but that’s alright. he craves the feeling of his heart
beating, wheel in hands, space itself bending for him. it feels like it’s bending for
him, anyway. or maybe he’s the one bending space. maybe when he’s racing, it feels
like anything is possible.

maybe he’s just a dork who got banned from legal racing competitions because he
feels like a scifi character when he shoots lasers and he wouldn’t give that up. who
knows. he doesn’t. he’s an idiot.
