favorite thing about fall [300 word limit]: it all started when they were a kit; they spent hours staring up, trying to pull shapes and animals out clouds, making fantastical stories about the day's friends.
lark never really moved on from clouds; their favorite thing was drawing them throughout the seasons, finding they were far away in summer, fluffy like chicks in the spring, dense like wool in the winter.
there's something else that happens in fall- it's not just the clouds, but the sky itself becomes a magical thing; the clouds start taking on a yellowy glow, the sky growing a little more purple as it gets into early november, overcast days have clouds that feel loftier than normal, a little distant, but warm.
that's what lark loves the most about autumn. the sky

kalon name: Garrick
favorite thing about fall:
This time of year, the yellowed tents are lifted and removed, off to the side roads in heaps collecting pebbles in the uplifted dust. Fall is the season of festivals, that's what the otherwise quaint town knows. Ears popped out of windows and children were shooed away from the clearing of green, where an auction stall was purposed into a ticket stand. The main attraction was roped off, a meek attempt to keep out any onlookers. Garrick, however, was the one allowed to bow under the rope and join the rest of the team in preparations. What were the waves of heads gathered by the stall waiting for? A chance to ride and pet the unicorns, of course. These magnificent beasts were naturally tranquil with a curved horn and a feathery mane which many kids liked to snuggle into. He's used to the appearance of these animals, but he's still awed by their beauty.

Why should Garrick like his job since it's seemingly grown dull over the eight years he's worked? To him, there's nothing old about seeing other Kalons light up at the sight of these creatures, since so many beasts are capable of lethal attack. In some ways, it's nice to take a break from the harsh realities of life where monsters roam the woods and terrify any Kalon into sticking to pathways. Life's too short to remain afraid, that's his motto. At least some Kalons have been progressing and seeing that not all creatures are to be feared, like the unicorns he showcases, but more work was to be done, as the unicorns still have some skeptics despite their friendly nature. This festival was only the first step.

        dear me,

it's five minutes to six. i just arrived at the station, and i'm waiting for the train. the lady standing next to me was carrying several pumpkins, so i offered to help her hold some. she asked me what i was doing, and so i tried to explain my autumnal equinox tradition. she looked a bit confused, but she thanked me for help with her pumpkins.

it's six-twelve and i'm on the train. window seat as usual, so i can get a better view. the sun isn't up yet, but i can see it starting to glint the edges of the horizon. quite a lovely view. i think we're about to begin moving, so i'll put my pen down for now.

i've been on the train for a few hours now. it's nearly nine o'clock. i hope the grove is still here. it seems to go by at different times every year. it really is spectacular, though. i will be very disappointed if i miss it. honestly, i could care less about the actual connotations of autumn--cold weather, pumpkin spice, halloween and all that--but this trip really is the highlight of my year.

i'm starting to lose hope. it's just passed five p.m. and there's still been no sign of the ginkgo grove. it really is a mysterious phenomenon. in fact, it sounds downright unbelievable when you think about it. i mean, a grove of ginkgos, in the middle of the city, that only appears when you ride the train on the autumnal equinox? it's--wait, i think--

the grove! it was there! it passed so fast, i would've missed it if i'd blinked.
the best part? i caught a ginkgo leaf through my open window. it's folded into this journal page.

        sincerely,
        me

favorite thing about fall: Michael isn't actually a huge fan of the fall, but he gladly welcomes a break from the heat. Despite being a total slacker, he actually likes fall mostly for going back to school. He's a total jock, always pumped for football and lacrosse. He also loves getting to be in a huge highschool full of pretty girls and boys, and all his favorite teammates. He's pretty excited for the new sports jackets, too, because the fleece lining is great in the winter. He loves being around his friends and hanging out every chance. He's kind of a nuisance in class, but at least he's having fun!

favorite thing about fall [300 word limit]:
|"Jump, jump!" Aurelia's sister shouted from across the yard.
They were raking leaves into piles and jumping in them, burying themselves deep into the brown,
orange, and red mess. Jumping into piles of leaves was Aurelia's favorite thing to do. Every time fall was close, Aurelia and her sister watched through their windows that were framed in white silk as the leaves fell. Every day they would and watch, until finally fall came. The leaves drifted peacefully down onto the ground, whispering to the kalons to make use of the leaves colorful bodies. Aurelia and her sister always seemed to hear their cries, because as soon as the leaves began to change color and fall more often, they ran outside, grabbed their rakes, and began to drag the spindly plastic across the ground, capturing all the leaves and holding them captive to it's sharp claws. They made huge piles and half-drowned in them each time they jumped. When they were called inside, they would rake the leaves into a trash bag and dump it on their neighbors roof. The rich, snobby kalon would hear the thump of their paws and head up to see what was going on. She never saw anything but leaves. It got so bad that she ordered all the trees in her backyard to be cut down. With no other house to dump their leaves on, Aurelia and her sister were forced to throw the leaves in the trash. After they did that, they would go inside covered in dirt and bugs to eat while their mom looked at the weirdly, then take a shower, brush up and go to bed. The next day, it would be leaves again.
"Umph!" The fresh smell of leaves hit her nose as she jumped into her biggest pile yet.

favorite thing about fall [300 word limit]: her favorite thing about fall is probably watching all of the leaves changing their colors and walking through parks (or just taking walks in general) and enjoying the cool weather. she loves spending time with her friends too, and fall is the perfect weather for that because it isn't constantly extremely hot in the fall, just pleasantly cool.

The Season of Remembrance

    Kalon Name: Perry
    Their Favorite Thing about Fall:

"Grandpa, what happens to Kalons when they die?"

Perry's grandfather chuckled softly, but his kind eyes would soon know the answer all too well.

"They join autumn's chorus. You can hear their voices in the breeze, and their souls pass peacefully with the falling of the leaves. Some will try to tell you fall's the season of mourning─but I prefer to call it the season of remembrance."

Perry smiled, yawned, and closed her eyes. "I like that."

Her grandfather tucked the blanket around her. "Me too."

    . . .

      "Are you coming, Perry?"

"No, I'll catch up─you go ahead."

The Kalon snickered. "You're so lame."

Another added snidely, "She's probably going to talk to the wind again. Claims she can hear voices."

"Fairies aren't real, or whatever dumb thing you believe in. Honestly, did you ever grow up?"

Perry watched her classmates run ahead of her, probably to get drunk or vandalize someone's property.

They didn't even deserve a second thought─but she pitied them.

It was early in the evening, and the park was the frequent hangout for the broken kids.

Taking a seat on a bench, she let the cold air sting her nose as she took a deep breath in. Eyes closed, she opened her ears to the season.

A teenager escaping the troubles at home by taking herself away from reality, immersed in her favorite book that never failed to transport her far, far away. An underpaid, overworked teacher out for a walk, earbuds in, heart somewhere else. A single mother, her two kits challenging each other to climb the highest tree. She saw herself in them.

A quick gust of wind tickled her fur, taking with it a cascade of leaves that tumbled down from the treetops.

      Windchimes. Lovesongs. A chorus.

      She smiled, remembering.

Image to some people, Eridan's coffee obsession may seem obscure. after all, who else has the Starbucks menu memorized by heart? he pays
them no mind. Eridan is an artist, and being an artist means you need to remain caffeinated for long periods of time while
working on pieces, especially ones going to galleries or sellers. or, at least this is what Eridan tells himself he does. in reality,
Eridan would probably be a caffeine fiend regardless of profession, and this is something he's acutely aware of. so what does
a crippling addiction to a cup of joe have to do with fall? well, fall is the time most commercial coffee chains start releasing
their seasonal drinks. from the infamous starbucks pumpkin spice latte to gloria jean's cinnamon bun flat whites, Eridan has
had practically every drink offered all year around. but nothing compares to the limited edition fall flavors, and he'll fight
if you disagree - as soon as his hands stop shaking from the caffeine.
