story: Pop! The bubblegum burst in her face, covering her lips in the sticky, pink mess. With a grumble and a groan, she put down the book she had been reading and began the frustrating task of trying to peel the bubblegum away from her skin. Her shiny lip piercings were the most infuriating. At this point, she had no idea why she kept chewing. It had lost all flavor twenty minutes ago. Then again, when you're stuck in a library all day, it serves as a nice little way of helping her focus so she wouldn't get bored.
She finally managed to get herself clean, so she took a moment to look around her. The library was dark and fairly empty at this time; her mother, the librarian, had left her there while she went and took care of some 'business'. The tall, dusty bookshelves seemed to creak and groan from the weight of the hundreds of books they held. The girl had read almost every book in this place. It was the only thing that kept her sane here anymore.
Looking back down at her book, she scanned the pages to try and find her spot again. Before she could, she heard another POP! behind her. She froze and looked around once more. It wasn't her bubblegum; she hadn't had the chance to blow it up again. Confused but unphased, she got up and took a few steps away from the table.
"Hello?" She called out into the darkness. When no response came, she rolled her eyes. "Look, I don't know how you got in here, but the library is closed, so you have to leave."
Another POP! She noticed it was coming from behind a nearby bookshelf, so she decided to investigate. Walking slowly and as quietly as possible, she peeked around the corner.
A puppy, one like she'd never seen before. It seemed confused, looking through the books on the shelf towards the table she'd been sitting at, as if wondering where she had gone. She slowly crept up behind it and gently grabbed its tail, just for a moment. With a yelp, it jumped and turned towards her, seeming to stutter over its words. Words?
"What was that for?!" It cried. "You could have given me a heart attack!!" The girl was in shock. Surely she'd fallen asleep while reading and this was all a dream. With a tilted head, the small, colourful puppy sniffed at her. She stood as still as possible, watching it.
"You don't smell like my other humans." It muttered to itself. She gathered all of her courage and picked it up, a little surprised that it didn't squirm too much. It huffed in her face, once again imitating her bubblegum pop.
"I don't know what mum's gonna say..." she said to herself, forgetting that it could understand her. "But I think I'm gonna keep you." Ignoring the puppy's small groan of annoyance, she took him back to her table.
Note: JUST under 500 words. I may use this for something else if I don't win I have a bunch of ideas for it.
