you must have dozed off for a moment under the monument, and a number of dreams quickly escape your memory. but being trailed around the woods should have had you pumping out too much adrenaline to fall asleep. clearly not much time has passed, as the night is still fairly young.
yet you distinctly feel yourself awaken, rested. the twin oni wrestle eachother around the base of the statue, and you spot the light coat of the larger buck lounging nearby. as you regain more and more of your senses, you see their snouts twitch and their ears flick in your direction. they certainly haven't forgotten you there.
it's then you realize, with the oni you've met in clear sight, that the warm, heaving wall at your back is far from the feeling of a cold stone statue. around you is slumped the long, dark body of what at first looks like a giant skeletal snake. an unusual sense of calmness stifles your startled instinct long enough to notice that the creature is not undead, but covered in a short coat of banded fur. and to your relief, the hefty boulder of a head you've been leaning your arm on bears a familiar set of tusks.
