Cat Name: Fernsplash
Clan: Cometclan
Rank: Warrior
Gender: She-cat
Age: 39 moons
Prompt:
Fernsplash headed towards her secret spot along the river. When she broke out of the trees she stopped, fur spiking. The river had risen and was rushing furiously against its banks, swirling into all the little cracks in the rocks that lined its shores.
"No!" She ran the last few lengths to the river and leaped, landing with a splash in the racing waters. Her paws churned furiously as she battled the current, swimming towards what used to be a little cave. Her little cave, where she kept her secrets. She reached the rock wall and found the entrance completely submerged.
"No, no no no..." she whispered, and dove. The currents buffeted her side, pulling at her fur as water filled her ears. She swam strongly into the cave, refusing to believe what she already knew to be true. Her paws found the ledges on the walls where she'd kept her secret, a relic from her past. But her old purple collar was gone.
Her lungs began to burn for air and she turned, scraped against the rocky sides by the river's current. She kicked off the wall and gasped as her head broke the surface, paws churning. She swam with the current to preserve her energy and made it to shore a little ways downstream. Fernsplash waded from the water and sat down, head drooping. Her collar, the only reminder she had left from her time as a kittypet, was gone.
She'd hidden it when she joined the Clan, not wanting to show weakness. But her old collar was important to her. Her time as a kittypet had been important in developing who she thought she was, and she would never forget the friends she'd had or her housefolk's kindness and care. And now... it was gone. Lost, maybe forever. Starclan knew when it had been washed away.
Fernsplash shook out her wet fur and got to her paws. She wasn't ready to give up yet, she could look for it downstream. Maybe it had gotten caught on the bank somewhere. She padded quickly along the river, head turning. Every time she caught a glimpse of something purple, like her collar, or shiny like the silver bell that hung from it, her heart rose in her chest, and every time she was disappointed. Either it was a flower, or a rock. Never the precious item she was already aching for.
The more she searched, the more desperate she became, jumping more than once into the river to retrieve something that turned out to be nothing. And though she looked for as long as she could, she couldn't find her lost collar. Finally exhausted, she returned to the rocks above her secret cave, still filled with water, and lay with her nose on paws, grieving for that she had lost.
