Summer. The season that is often perceived as the warm, sunny season, or in some cases, the rain-less, cloudless season. It was the season to sit on the beach, soaking in the suns ever-present rays (responsibly, of course), and paddle around in the tepid ocean waters. Those who believe it to be just that, could not have been more wrong.
The sun shone down upon the lake as it rose above the neighbouring mountains, striking the water with light and colour that danced upon its surface. Waves created ripples in the orange glow, but that only made it more beautiful. Flashes of scattered silver swam just beneath the glimmering surface, shimmering scales reflecting the sunlight to make the elegant swimmers look like royalty. It was a view to wake up to. In fact it was the view Aidan, Eros, and Pluto woke up to most mornings during the two weeks they spent at the lake camp-site. Key word; most.
They had only been at the camp-site for four days when almost-black clouds shrouded the sky, darkening the general vicinity gradually, until it could've been late evening rather than late morning. It was definitely an unexpected sight as the trio pulled themselves from their tents, groggy from waking up. No one seemed to be of the morning variety. The once soft, dry sand that had surrounded the shore of the lake was now a murky sludge-coloured mess that stuck between their toes as they made their way to the edge of the water. Fresh splashes of rain caused ripples across the surface of the previously pristine water, sending swirls of sand cascading into the water as miniature waves lapped the shore, creating a foggy look upon its surface. Even when squinting, it had become near impossible to see the bottom of the once clear depths of the lake.
'Rain? Really?' Pluto groaned outwardly, scratching the back of his neck absentmindedly as he glared out across the water. If only a death-stare could scare off the rain. Out of the three in the group, his fur was not only the densest, but the whitest and, as it was to be expected, the most likely to get dirty when the dirt surrounding them inevitably became sticky mud. He lifted his foot, grimacing at the squelching sound that accompanied it, only to hesitate before putting it down again. Sighing, he glanced up at the clouds, and as if in response, the rain pelted down harder against the ground, splashing into small puddles of its own creation. Their original plans for the day were ruined. Upon seeing the glowering expression on his friends face, Aidan growled teasingly, taking his chance to leap forward, directly into the puddle beside Pluto. Its muddy contents were thrown upwards as his paws connected with its surface, and within a matter of seconds, Pluto's once clean - albeit damp - fur, was coated in a layer of mud. Well, at least his legs and belly, anyway.
'Now,' Aidan stifled his laughter, though Eros made no attempt at any such pleasantries, 'You can't complain about it anymore. You're already dirty, so why not embrace it?' No one spoke for a moment, while Aidan continued to splash his feet about, only creating a bigger stain along the white viscet's fur. Baring his teeth in a half-grin, Pluto narrowed his eyes, his tail swinging along the ground. There was a shimmer of revenge caught in his eye, but he didn't give either viscet a chance to respond to its sudden appearance.
'Embrace this.'
'Oi!' Laughter filled the air, its joyful sound catching in each droplet of water as it fell, echoing louder as they landed. There was a look of surprise smeared across Aidan's face, though it was partially concealed by the rather large splodge of mud that had hit its target dead-on. Wiping his eyes clear, he blinked a few times, beads of rain clinging to his eyelashes only to slide off as they lowered. He barely had a chance to duck before a second mud-bomb came hurtling rapidly towards him. A grin replaced the shock, and he lurched forward, scooping up a handful of the mud as he went.
It didn't take long for one mud-bomb to turn into a hundred. It was a battle, and no one was prepared to lose. At one point, Eros had built a mini mud-barricade, to protect himself, only it didn't last very long. After about three solid hits, it collapsed directly on top of him, dousing his already soaked fur with bucket loads more sludge. Their battle progressed rapidly, until they could feel their muscles burning in protest, before it came to a gradual end. Aidan ended up on the ground, panting as he attempted to catch his lost breath in between fits of laughter. Eros and Pluto managed to remain standing, though they leaned on each for support. Who knew mud could be so heavy.
'I call a truce,' Eros spoke after they had regained a bit of breath, their lungs taking time to adjust to the oxygen it was finally receiving. There seemed to be a mutual agreement, and after a few minutes to calm down, they came to the decision to wash the muck off in the lake. The truce did not make it to the water.
Running down the platform towards the water, their claws left microscopic marks in the softened wood, tiny particles clinging to the underside of their paws. Coats already weighed down by a mix of rain and mud, they didn't notice the added weight as they plunged beneath the blue depths of the lake. Their race to the water had very quickly turned from well, a race, to an all-out water war. Tails and paws flung water in any and every direction, causing a bit more than ripples in the water around them. It churned, crashing against each of them as they all attempted to push it towards the others. They weren't safe; under or above the water. The air was still tepid, but the lake had not accepted the heat quite as easily. The rain seemed to be warming up to the idea.
The rest of the day was spent in the water, between diving competitions, and laps, they had enough to keep them occupied well into the afternoon, and right through to the evening. They ended up back at the camp in time for dinner, soaking wet, but very much content with the day, even if they were dragging their feet behind them. Dinner was unlikely to happen, however, seeing as the fire refused point-blank to light, and in they end, they ended up giving up.
'I don't know about you two, but I'm exhausted.' No one needed to look up to know that they were all in agreement, though with a yawn, Pluto nodded, 'And if I'm not getting dinner, I might as well sleep.'
'I guess I'll see y'all in the morning then.' Standing up, Pluto dragged himself to his tent, unzipping it enough for him to squeeze inside, before closing it again. He barely gave his body time to lower before he was dropping onto the sleeping bag he'd laid out. Curling into a ball. he pulled the other half across his body, closing his eyes. There was silence for a few moments, and he couldn't help but chuckle as a soft voice sounded suddenly from outside the tent, breaking the momentary peace.
'Oh hey. The rain's stopped.'
