Raven collapsed beneath a bush, exhaustion finally overtaking her. Her tongue was dry, and her whole body ached. Raven lay there, gasping for air. The day the black mouse had left her home felt like months ago- because it had been.
She hadn’t been alone then. She had left her wasteland of a home with group of mice, not much stronger than she was now. They hadn’t thought about how dangerous the outside world was- only about getting away from the sickness and famine that claimed their home, a once beautiful paradise.
Many of the mice had collapsed from exhaustion, only a few weeks after beginning their journey. The lives of many more were taken by vicious predators or poisonous berries that they had mistakenly eaten.
But Raven had survived. She had watched as her friends suffered, and soon succumbed the dangers beyond their home.
She was alone.
Raven knew she couldn’t continue any longer unless she got nourishment. But she could only lay there, feeling her life slip away. She was helpless as she lost her grip on life and slipped into the dark void.
Raven woke to the cool taste of water.
She opened one eye, and saw a blurry figure hovering over her.
“You’re alive,” said a voice in relief. “I thought you were dead.”
Raven blinked. Her vision cleared and she saw a reddish brown mouse standing next to her. Raven rolled onto her stomach and stared at the newcomer.
“Who’r'you…” Raven slurred.
“Rose,” said the mouse. “And you are…?’
“Raven,” said Raven. “How am I still alive?”
“I don’t know,” said Rose. “When I found you, I thought you were dead. But I’m glad you’re not. I would’ve felt terrible.”
“I can’t thank you enough,” she said, relieved.
“It’s nothing,” said Rose bashfully. “Now come on. We have to get going.”
“We?” Raven asked. “Where?”
“Back to my home,” said Rose. “You’re in no condition to travel right now, and sleeping under a bush is no way to recover.”
“You want me to stay?”
“Of course,” said Rose. “Now come on. Home is waiting.”
