Austria was born into a litter of five to a champion show dog named Maggie. She was the ruby of the litter and it was thought she wouldn't survive to open her eyes, but miraculously she did. It was obvious she was never going to be as succsessful as her mother or littermates. When her siblings were being sold, she was given to a man who gave her as a present to his daughter who had just recently moved into an apartment of her own. The daughter was incredible negligent and often forgot that Austria even existed, and the attention she did give her was often negative. Because of this, she became extremely anxious around people. The only solace she had was Napoleon, the plush chicken that came with her from her first home.

When Austria was big enough, she decided that she had to run. She took Napoleon and bolted out the door the first chance she got. For the next few years of her life, she lived as a city stray and her fear of humans grew even more. Her shelter was underneath a dumpster behind a Chinese resturant. The staff noticed the nervous dog and would leave out scraps for her and very slowly earned her trust. They were only ones who could approach her when the shelter staff came to pick her up.

why the chicken?:

Napoleon has been Austria's best friend since she was born. She often curled up next to him when her siblings were off causing trouble in her household. It carries the scent of her first home, her littermates, and her mother-so naturally it is the only thing that can calm her down in a room full of humans.

history: She was born on a farm, the runt of the litter. The farmer didn't think she was cut out for farm work so he let his daughter keep her. His daughter thought it was dumb that she couldn't herd the sheep like her brothers and sisters could, so she trained her to herd chickens instead. She ended up guarding the chickens at night too, and fended them off from foxes many times. Unfortunately, the family moved away and left Daina at the shelter.
why the chicken?: The chicken was given to her on her first birthday. She liked it because it was smaller than the other chickens and it reminded her of herself. She wanted the chicken to feel big and strong, so she named him giant
