you bought a star in the sky tonight
The crack of dawn was splitting the sky. It shattered the night into thousands of pieces; the harsh glare overtaking the cool, comforting darkness.
It promised change.
Swiftpaw aimlessly wandered along, enjoying the sunshine on their pelt. For once, Swiftpaw did not feel stressed about prophecies or medicine. No one was hurt, and they were at ease with their thoughts for once. They looked around, tail twitching slightly, and gasped slightly at a figure that they caught sight of in the distance.
Is... Is that a StarClan cat?Swiftpaw's tail-tip began to twitch anxiously, the large figure of a cat in the distance. The figure was clearly feline, but also... Not? Not only did it have a short tail, but it also stood with a mysterious air to it. Swiftpaw felt that if they took a pawstep towards the figure, they would vanish. Their amber eyes narrowed in confusion as they tried to work out who this cat could possibly be - they had not seen a loner like this before in their life. However, the figure suddenly jerked from where it was standing and vanished over the hillside, leaving Swiftpaw to twitch their tail in frustration.

because your life is dark
"A StarClan cat?" Peachblossom snorted disbelievingly; rolling her eyes at Swiftpaw as they finished telling the story to Stormstar.
"It's entirely possible, Peach - they're a medicine cat," Stormstar pointed out calmly; eyes lighting up with interest. Swiftpaw was glad that someone was listening to them, at least. They were convinced that there was something special about the strange cat they had seen. The cat's pawsteps radiated with mystery, and the air around them flooded with radiance and light.
I'm going to find them, they thought determinedly. They nodded to the two older cats, before heading towards their own den. Yawning, they settled into their nest - wondering if their dreams would bring them more knowledge.

and it needs some light
Swiftpaw made a challenge for themself to find this cat in their free time. It was difficult, for Swiftpaw could not even catch a whiff of their scent from the day before. Logically, the cat probably had not been there for too long - so their scent had not pooled into the area. But it was entirely possible that this wasn't a living cat. It had not rained for days - so the scent could not have been washed away. Despite this, the wild winds would undoubtedly make tracking any scents difficult.
Their eyes widened as they caught another glimpse in the distance. And, rather than being the form of Peachblossom standing arrogantly in the sun [
"Look at me, the sun loves me," she would say, whilst Swiftpaw would roll their eyes.], it was instead a figure with a distinctly bobbed tail.
Swiftpaw quickly began to bound across the springy moorland after the strange figure. To their relief, the strange figure did not move. As Swiftpaw's eyes adjusted to the light of the sun directly behind the cat, they saw that the cat looked somewhat young, and was a lynx point with bright blue eyes - though they were unreadable. The cat looked somewhat nervous at first, but upon seeing Swiftpaw's small figure, quickly gained a much more cheerful disposition - although their eyes did not speak of this cheerfulness.
"Who are you?" The bobtailed cat asked, seeming to have polite interest.
"I'm Swiftpaw, the medicine cat of Duskclan," Swiftpaw replied; feeling slightly disappointed that this wasn't a magical StarClan cat,
"what's your name?""Name's are but a burden - rocks that hold down the leaves of freedom," the strange cat replied quickly; letting out a hasty purr,
"but you may call me Wolf, if it is a name you seek to refer to me by."
Swiftpaw blinked confusedly at the cat's response. Eyes narrowing slightly, they began to feel... Suspicious of this stranger. It was difficult to tell exactly what this stranger was up to.
"Where do you come from?" Swiftpaw asked cautiously; curious despite their suspicion.
"I come from the lonely cry to the moon, from the winds that whistle through the leaves, from the cry of a kitten to its mother.""That's.... nice?" Swiftpaw meowed confusedly; tilting their head to the side.
"Little kit, one does not tell such information to strangers." Wolf purred silkily.
Swiftpaw had to think on their paws quickly if they wanted to find out any information on this strange cat - and whether they could possibly threaten Duskclan.
"You seem very smart," they meowed casually,
"to think of such poetic things to say on your paws.""The wolves are the singers and the fighters of the dogs; the most fierce and the most elegant. There is a reason for my name, little kit." Wolf meowed; tone still silkly,
"but, I am afraid my time here must end now, for the hunger claws in the belly of all creatures."Swiftpaw blinked confusedly as the cat suddenly began to bound across the slope in the direction of the stream.
Swiftpaw was suspicious of this stranger.
Their voice may have taken a silky tone, but their eyes did not.
Their blue eyes were...
Void. Void of emotion. But not from being emotionless. But from hiding one's self. From hiding away from... Something.
And who knew what that something was?
Who knew what dangers it could bring?
Swiftpaw didn't.
And that was worrying.

and you could buy up all the stars
"Weren't you saying the other day they were a StarClan cat?" Stormstar meowed; evidently confused.
"Well, yes. But it's clear that they're not.""And you think they could be plotting something?" Peachblossom asked; a serious expression across her face for once.
"It's possible. They answered no questions in a straight forward manner, so I believe they must be hiding something. Whether it's dangerous to us, I don't know," meowed Swiftpaw with a sigh.
"The only thing we can do is keep an eye out, I suppose." Replied Stormstar wearily.

but it wouldn't change who you are
Swiftpaw was out; walking towards the stream that they had seen Wolf walk towards. Swiftpaw opened their mouth to scent the air and, sure enough, Wolf's scent was undeniably strong. They crouched down low and soon began to slowly crawl towards the place where the scent was the strongest. As Swiftpaw's head looked over the edge of the bushes that was encircling the cat, they saw that Wolf was lazing about, and completely oblivious to Swiftpaw's presence. It was a nice den - a line of thorny bushes hid a small clearing, where the cat was curled up onto the soft grass.
A secretive spot, how fitting for them, Swiftpaw thought amusedly.
Swiftpaw prodded the cat with a paw, and before the cat was even aware of who had woken them, they asked,
"why do you have a bobbed tail?""I - why do -" Wolf woke up, startled.
"Why do you have a bobbed tail?" Swiftpaw repeated, firmly.
"I... Why do... It's... It's..." Wolf floundered about as they tried to come up with an answer before sitting up. Their expression and disposition spoke of annoyance, yet their eyes did not speak of this. In fact...
Did they speak of nervousness? Wolf quickly looked away from Swiftpaw's searching eyes.
"Why do I have a bobbed tail? Why do dogs howl? Why do rabbits tunnel? Why do birds fly?" Wolf replied; still refusing to look Swiftpaw in the eyes. Their demeanour was that they were clearly uncomfortable with such questions, although Swiftpaw didn't know if this brought back bad memories, or if they were still hiding something.
"Your appearance was sudden, like the snap of a twig, so I hope you forgive me when I say that I would like your exit to be just as sudden." Wolf stated after a period of silence; tail bushed up in emotion.
But what emotion? Will I ever decipher this cat? Swiftpaw thought to themself as they nodded slowly in agreement to the stranger and began to back out of their den.

you're still living life in the dark
The black and white medicine cat apprentice was out looking for herbs. Their poppy seed stock was running low - mainly because Sheeppaw continuously insisted on running about from rock to rock, falling, and then complaining about pain. Their eyes searched for the characteristic red flower, and their eyes brightened when they saw a few of them clustered near the wood's edge. Carefully, Swiftpaw began nipping at the heads of the poppies.
"My brother was a medicine cat."The sudden voice startled Swiftpaw - who whirled around to come face-to-face with the elusive, and surprisingly silent, Wolf. Swiftpaw realised this was the perfect opportunity to find out more about this cat - after all, they had approached them, and their eyes were clear.
They must be comfortable right now, I guess, Swiftpaw realised; twitching their tail tip in curiosity.
"So... You were once in a Clan?" Swiftpaw asked curiously; turning to face the stranger.
"On a day long, long ago? Countless seasons of rebirth, life, death and decay? Yes." They meowed, their tone calm, but their eyes seemed to take on that... Slightly guarded quality they had before.
"Why are you no longer in a Clan?" Swiftpaw's voice was casual - they were cautious about how curious they seemed, otherwise this cat would probably dance around the question once more.
"Shame is a powerful emotion. It even over-rides love when you've brought shame unto those you love."A wistful and regretful note was in their voice. Swiftpaw wondered if this shameful secret is what they had been clearly hiding and guarding from the very start. It was likely, they supposed. Swiftpaw opened their mouth to ask another question, but, despite their endless curiosity, could not find a question. But... This probably wasn't a topic this cat wanted to disclose right now.
"I have to take these poppy seeds back to the camp," Swiftpaw mumbled through a mouthful of poppy seeds as he picked up the poppies.
"Of course. The swift healing paws are needed, little kit," purred Wolf.
Swiftpaw nodded awkwardly; their head weighed down from the poppies. They then turned away, curiosity about the stranger growing ever stronger.

it's just who you are
The sun was high in the sky - usually making a walk across the moorland unbearable, yet a cool breeze ruffled through Swiftpaw's fur. They were glad that there was the breeze, for there was no shelter in the moorland.
They wondered about Wolf.
They hadn't seen them in a while. Swiftpaw wasn't sure if they were still here - perhaps the constant questions had made them uncomfortable? A feeling of guilt stirred in Swiftpaw's stomach. They hadn't meant to drive away the stranger, they just wanted to be sure that their Clan was safe.
Their paws were firmly set on the Twolegplace - to collect some precious catmint. They were less than happy about crossing the Thunderpath, and grimaced at the terrible, acidic smell which burned at their nostrils. They gingerly set a forepaw onto it and felt no vibrations, nor was there any roaring in their ears. Confident that it was safe to cross, Swiftpaw began to bound across the black surface - arriving safely to the other side heartbeats later. There was not even a few tail-lengths of grass ahead of them before the tall, grey slabs of the Twolegplace rose up.
Swiftpaw stuck to the edge of the line of fences, carefully keeping to the edge of this unfriendly world. They had eventually reached the abandoned nest that had a plentiful crop of catmint plants growing wild - they could smell the mouth-watering scents from fox-lengths away. Swiftpaw nimbly jumped up onto the fence, before quickly dropping into the garden below. Never having trouble here before, Swiftpaw merely began to nip some of the stems of the plant - not taking too many, of course.
And then the scent of crow-food hit their nose.
They hissed slightly in surprise; whirling around to be faced with two large rats. Swiftpaw's tail bushed up in fear. Of course, Stormstar had given them lessons in how to fight [
"Just in case," he had said,
"you never know what dangers there are."]. But rats? Swiftpaw had never been taught how to fight these creatures - and they wanted a fight. Swiftpaw let out a hiss and unsheathed their claws. The two rats exchanged a glance, and then both flung themselves towards the small apprentice. Swiftpaw tried to swipe at them in vain, but all of their blows were clumsy and seemed to always miss - the two rats were weighing them down. Swiftpaw soon found themselves pushed onto the ground and the pain from the bites was like a fire - slowly spreading, and then a flash before burning across their body. They let out a yowl of distress.
Without warning, one of the rats became limp. Shaking, Swiftpaw looked up to see Wolf tossing the body of one of the rat's aside. They dragged the other rat off of Swiftpaw and turned to it; spitting insults. The rat, however, was not frightened - in fact, it was blinded with anger after seeing its companion's limp body. Swiftpaw watched in awe as the cat began to swipe fiercely at the rat and jumped onto its back - a calculated movement from seasons of practise. And, with one bite, the fight was over.
"W... Wolf?" Swiftpaw breathed; heaving themselves to a sitting up position,
"Why... Why did you...?"Wolf grinned.
"I believe we are friends now, are we not, fluttering swift?" They purred in response. A guarded look was still in their eyes, but... It was more warm than it had been. Swiftpaw smiled slightly.
"Can you help me back to camp?" Swiftpaw asked; wincing as they got to their paws.
"Of course, it wouldn't look very good to leave you stranded like an island is in water, now, would it?" They meowed in response; offering their shoulder for Swiftpaw to lean on and picking up the catmint stalks in their mouth.
Eventually, after what seemed like many seasons, the two cats arrived at DuskClan's camp. The peaceful dusk chatter was broken by yowls of concern. Stormstar was first to reach the pair.
"Swiftpaw! What happened? Are you okay?" He asked frantically; beginning to lap at their head, like a parent to their kit.
"I'll be alright, I have burdock root in stock. There were rats when I was gathering catmint," they explained,
"Wolf fought them off when I couldn't."Stormstar's eyes finally focused onto the stranger.
"Oh!" He meowed gratefully,
"how can I repay you?"Wolf's eyes flashed slightly with interest.
"Well," they began,
"I suppose I would not oppose to a meal.""Of course!" Stormstar purred happily,
"Please, stay for as many days as you want.""A friendly storm," Wolf murmured; mostly to themself,
"that's different." Wolf's bright blue eyes turned towards Swiftpaw.
"Come, intelligent swift, your wounds need treatment, and your mind needs rest," they purred; nudging the injured medicine cat apprentice towards their den.

it's who you are
"What do you think of them?" Stormstar meowed, turning towards the small medicine cat apprentice.
"I'd like to say I know them, but I don't. And maybe I never will. But I think that's okay. They have their reasons for their secrets, and I can respect that. They still seem like a good cat." Swiftpaw replied; not taking their eyes off of the stars above their head.
"I remember when you thought they were a Starclan cat." Stormstar purred.
"With Wolf? Anything's possible."-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
