What are they proud of?: Himself. Call him conceited, sure, but he worked hard to be able to finally say he's proud of himself.
He spent his childhood watching others dash through the clusters of trees at breakneck speeds and soar into the sky, and he followed with stumbling steps and twisted feet, his balance off enough to often result in him tumbling and smacking himself with his own wings. Those others watched, snickered, and left him to gaze upon them and wish he could do what they did.
What did he do? He persisted. He turned his ears away from those who mocked him. He trained every day, jogging, gliding, enduring every scrape and bruise he earned from crashing and moved beyond them. He turned to himself for encouragement, celebrating every victory and reassuring himself after every failure, cheering himself on to do what he truly wanted to do.
It all paid off, slowly but surely. He developed better balance, became faster, stronger, and no longer stumbled into obstacles. He learned to dodge, dive, and gallop at the same speeds he admired; no, faster, as he wanted to show everyone he could truly do whatever he persisted to do. When he first outran those who jeered at him, he congratulated them on their efforts, acknowledging that they had done wrong yet choosing not to hold a grudge once they apologized. He became an athletic idol for some, and rather than mocking their first wobbly runs and flights, he encouraged them as he did to himself.
He's proud of who he became.
