xxxTwo cats trudged through the thick woodland, a strengthening drizzle seeping through the dry tree branches and dappling their pelts. The area around them slowly began to dim as night fell. There was no sound of the crickets chirping, owls hooting, or the sounds of little animals retreating to their burrows. Soon, the drizzle turned to rain, which thrummed against the ground and splattered on their pelts. Suddenly, lashed out across the sky like a wild claw, illuminating the forest for a split second to reveal the two cats. A large, dark ginger tom with piercing yellow eyes, his thick fur damp and sticky with mud, and a small she-kit, her once silky tortoiseshell fur was now wet and dirty, her copper eyes wide with fear and terror as she gazed up at the lightning. A loud, echoing boom came almost immediately after, ringing out across the entire valley. Frightened, the she-kit went to run, but the larger tom whirled around to face her, his gaze blazing like forest fire. "It's just thunder," he snapped, "come on." Nodding slowly, she shuffled after him, tail dragging behind her. She'd jump each time she heard the clap of thunder, but would keep moving out of fear of getting in trouble.
xxxThey would be walking for seemingly forever when something terrible happened. When another flash of lightning lit up she sky, the she-kit expected to see another branch creeping through the clouds, but to her horror, it flashed down to the earth. "Brother!" She wailed. Her older brother whirled around, nose wrinkled in disgust, only to turn into a look of fear and shock. He streaked forward and grabbed her by the scruff, jumping out of the way of a flaming branch, which gave a heave and fell to the ground, sparks shooting out from its bark, setting the dry grass and bushes around it aflame. Her brother continued to run, his little sister clamped firmly in his jaws as he pelted through the forest, it turning a deep red and orange.Smoke billowed up from the fiery tendrils and filled the forest with its sickening scent.
xxxThen, he tripped. The little tortoiseshell was sent flying, hitting the ground with a thump and a whimper. Scrabbling to her paws, she raced back towards her brother, blocked by a flaming branch. "Morning!"He screeched, only to be drowned out by the crack of thunder and the roar of the flames. They lapped hungrily at the foliage and towards her as it crept higher and higher into the air. Morning let out a wail, "Russet!" Russet gave no response for a few heartbeats, but soon, a muffled, choked, word came through"Run!" Without waiting, she whirled around, only to be blocked by small, but quickly growing flames. Shutting her eyes, she backed up, waiting for them to eat her up like they did her brother. But then, a soft but urgent voice came from in front of her, behind the wall of flames, she could just make out the silhouette of a cat. Morning heard it again. "Jump through!" Came the muffled voice once more. "I can't!" She whimpered, her wide eyes watering from the heat. "I'll be here waiting on the other side, please!" The voice grew louder and more frantic, as if the fiery orange and red monster was slowly creeping towards her too. Shutting her eyes for a moment, she got to her paws, legs trembling. Bunching up her muscles, she sprang through the flames, letting out a pitiful wail as the flames snapped and bit at her flank and leg, scorching her pelt. She landed as a small, trembling heap and the rest of what happened was a haze and all she could feel was getting picked up by the stranger, and the terrible throbbing on her flank.
xxxThe little kit let out a feeble cry as she woke up, her paws scrabbling against the soft moss, expression scrunched up and pained. Though, she stopped squirming as a gentle paw was placed on her side. She opened her eyes, surprised to see a ginger tabby peering down at her, her amber eyes flooded with a mix of relief and concern. "I thought you were never gonna wake up." She mewed breathlessly. "It hurts!"The she-kit whined, looking at her leg. There was no fur on it and it was a dull but obnoxious red color. The she-cat made her way over to her leg and began applying some goop. It felt cool to the touch and eased the throbbing just a little. Backing away and pulling a small leaf-wrap out from a scoop out of the wall, she placed it gently at the kit's paws. "These are poppy seeds and thyme." She explained as the little tortoiseshell bent down and lapped up the herbs, feeling the pain begin to ebb. Lifting her head, she blinked up at the older cat, a look of confusion plastered on her face. "Who are you? And what happened to my leg?" She questioned, her voice shaky. The stranger's look of concern now looked troubled. "I'm Eveningflame, medicine cat of Valleyclan. You're in my den and your leg was burned." She said, her eyes distant, as if recalling something far in the past. Morning's fur bushed up in alarm, suddenly remembering what happened. "Where's my brother?" The she-kit asked slowly, only to get a look of sadness and sympathy from the medicine cat. "We sent out a patrol earlier to look for cats, but they couldn't go deeper into the territory, it was in the East Forest." Eveningflame told her truthfully. The medicine cat got to her paws, padding over and sitting next to the kit, curling her tail around her comfortingly. "Why don't you tell me your name, sweetie? She gave her a long look. 'Morning." The medicine cat smiled thoughtfully, looking down at the little kit.
"Well Morning, you're always welcome to stay here in Valleyclan with us." She proposed.
"I'd like that."
