xxxTwo cats trudged through the thick woodland, a strengthening drizzle seeping through the dry tree branches and dappling their pelts. The area around them slowly began to dim as night fell. There was no sound of the crickets chirping, owls hooting, or the sounds of little animals retreating to their burrows. Soon, the drizzle turned to rain, which thrummed against the ground and splattered on their pelts. Suddenly, lashed out across the sky like a wild claw, illuminating the forest for a split second to reveal the two cats. A large, dark ginger tom with piercing yellow eyes, his thick fur damp and sticky with mud, and a small she-kit, her once silky tortoiseshell fur was now wet and dirty, her copper eyes wide with fear and terror as she gazed up at the lightning. A loud, echoing boom came almost immediately after, ringing out across the entire valley. Frightened, the she-kit went to run, but the larger tom whirled around to face her, his gaze blazing like forest fire. "It's just thunder," he snapped, "come on." Nodding slowly, she shuffled after him, tail dragging behind her. She'd jump each time she heard the clap of thunder, but would keep moving out of fear of getting in trouble.

xxxThey would be walking for seemingly forever when something terrible happened. When another flash of lightning lit up she sky, the she-kit expected to see another branch creeping through the clouds, but to her horror, it flashed down to the earth. "Brother!" She wailed. Her older brother whirled around, nose wrinkled in disgust, only to turn into a look of fear and shock. He streaked forward and grabbed her by the scruff, jumping out of the way of a flaming branch, which gave a heave and fell to the ground, sparks shooting out from its bark, setting the dry grass and bushes around it aflame. Her brother continued to run, his little sister clamped firmly in his jaws as he pelted through the forest, it turning a deep red and orange.Smoke billowed up from the fiery tendrils and filled the forest with its sickening scent.

xxxThen, he tripped. The little tortoiseshell was sent flying, hitting the ground with a thump and a whimper. Scrabbling to her paws, she raced back towards her brother, blocked by a flaming branch. "Morning!"He screeched, only to be drowned out by the crack of thunder and the roar of the flames. They lapped hungrily at the foliage and towards her as it crept higher and higher into the air. Morning let out a wail, "Russet!" Russet gave no response for a few heartbeats, but soon, a muffled, choked, word came through"Run!" Without waiting, she whirled around, only to be blocked by small, but quickly growing flames. Shutting her eyes, she backed up, waiting for them to eat her up like they did her brother. But then, a soft but urgent voice came from in front of her, behind the wall of flames, she could just make out the silhouette of a cat. Morning heard it again. "Jump through!" Came the muffled voice once more. "I can't!" She whimpered, her wide eyes watering from the heat. "I'll be here waiting on the other side, please!" The voice grew louder and more frantic, as if the fiery orange and red monster was slowly creeping towards her too. Shutting her eyes for a moment, she got to her paws, legs trembling. Bunching up her muscles, she sprang through the flames, letting out a pitiful wail as the flames snapped and bit at her flank and leg, scorching her pelt. She landed as a small, trembling heap and the rest of what happened was a haze and all she could feel was getting picked up by the stranger, and the terrible throbbing on her flank.

xxxThe little kit let out a feeble cry as she woke up, her paws scrabbling against the soft moss, expression scrunched up and pained. Though, she stopped squirming as a gentle paw was placed on her side. She opened her eyes, surprised to see a ginger tabby peering down at her, her amber eyes flooded with a mix of relief and concern. "I thought you were never gonna wake up." She mewed breathlessly. "It hurts!"The she-kit whined, looking at her leg. There was no fur on it and it was a dull but obnoxious red color. The she-cat made her way over to her leg and began applying some goop. It felt cool to the touch and eased the throbbing just a little. Backing away and pulling a small leaf-wrap out from a scoop out of the wall, she placed it gently at the kit's paws. "These are poppy seeds and thyme." She explained as the little tortoiseshell bent down and lapped up the herbs, feeling the pain begin to ebb. Lifting her head, she blinked up at the older cat, a look of confusion plastered on her face. "Who are you? And what happened to my leg?" She questioned, her voice shaky. The stranger's look of concern now looked troubled. "I'm Eveningflame, medicine cat of Valleyclan. You're in my den and your leg was burned." She said, her eyes distant, as if recalling something far in the past. Morning's fur bushed up in alarm, suddenly remembering what happened. "Where's my brother?" The she-kit asked slowly, only to get a look of sadness and sympathy from the medicine cat. "We sent out a patrol earlier to look for cats, but they couldn't go deeper into the territory, it was in the East Forest." Eveningflame told her truthfully. The medicine cat got to her paws, padding over and sitting next to the kit, curling her tail around her comfortingly. "Why don't you tell me your name, sweetie? She gave her a long look. 'Morning." The medicine cat smiled thoughtfully, looking down at the little kit.
"Well Morning, you're always welcome to stay here in Valleyclan with us." She proposed.

"I'd like that."

Asphodelstar had busied herself that day clearing out the shpellë-rënie, making sure that the small piles of sand and leaves were arranged into soft nests. She was quite content bring alone, but had a feeling that she wouldn’t remain that way for long, and wanted to be prepared. Asphodelstar hadn’t yet gotten around to moving a few large stones farther away from the entrance above, but they weren’t currently a priority. The colorful leader had already traveled to the lulefields twice in the past three suns to collect as many different types of flowers as she could. Something about the petals made the leader feel joyful, and she wanted her future clan’s home to be covered in them. Maybe some would even take root and grow inside the shpellë-rënie. Asphodelstar sighed blissfully. All she needed was Rattler, and this place would be perfect. But Rattler was gone, and she had to move on.

xxxxxIt was all she could do not to cry when it came into view, and she pelted towards it, already celebrating her success in outmaneuvering the predator. This was cut short by a growl and searing pain in her flank as the lynx made one last attempt at its prey, leaping forward and slamming its paw into her. She cried out as it sent her toppling, fortunately into the mouth of the rabbit warren. She took the chance, ignoring the burning around the wound, to scramble further into the den and out of the lynx's reach. The big cat snarled at its loss, pacing in front of the den and pawing at it's opening for a while, before deciding that any more energy used would be wasted, and wandering off to find something else.

xxxxxSorrelpaw wheezed, burying her head in her paws, and shaking at the close call. After a moment she turned to look at the damage to her flank, wincing as she took in the claw marks that ran across it. The young cat moved to lick them, knowing she had to be clean. Once she finished, she flopped over, exhausted and hurting from the chase. She'd rest here for a while before heading back to camp, or perhaps wait for her mentor to come find her. With that the she~cat drifted off into a fitful sleep, happy for escaping the encounter with her life.

the sound of claws tearing at pelts awoke flamekit from her slumber, she lazily opened her eyes unaware of what tragedy was happening in her camp. “flamekit!” the small she-cat heard before feeling a sharp pain on the side of her face. a now wide awake and very frightened flamekit scurried to the nearest escape, feeling someone or something hot on her heels. she felt the snapping of teeth on the tip of her tail and turned to see a large, snarling dog glaring at her, their eyes the color of fire. “momma!” flamekit called out, hoping for any cat to hear her.
the pressure on the tip of her tail was soon released as she saw a fellow warrior come to her rescue. flamekit did not have any time to mew a thank you before she bolted to try to find safety. she looked for the familiar face of her brother or her mother but she could find neither. she scurried up a near tree and climbed until she felt safe.
she looked down from where she was and for the first time saw the chaos happening. Her eyes grew moist with tears as she realized the reality of her mother and brother. she closed her eyes tight and that was when she felt the stinging coming from her cheek and her ear. flamekit placed her paw on her cheek and felt that it was a little moist, she felt the cut and knew it could have been worse. she had survived the chaos with just a few scars on her face and a few furs missing from her tail. she not only had physical scars but also internal, her heart held the worst scar of all, the pain of losing her family.
night grew and flamekit jolted awake when she felt the touch of someone, the scent of a familiar clan member finally calmed her down. the small cat looked up at breamstar, leader of rushclan. her leader had sad eyes as she helped flamekit down from the tree. “close your eyes, flamekit,” breamstar instructed but flamekit could not obey. her eyes took in all of the blood stains that littered the ground of the camp. “how many?” flamekit whispered. “only three,” breamstar whispered back as she nudged flamekit along. the orange she-cat knew that her mother and brother were of the three killed so she kept quiet until they reached the medicine den.
breamstar put some chewed up herbs on all of her wounds and they immediately began to feel soothed. “you can stay in here tonight, flamekit,” the leader sadly meowed as she showed flamekit a nest. “can you stay with me, breamstar?” Replied flamekit, praying to starclan that the leader would not refuse. “of course,” breamstar curled up in the nest and motioned for flamekit to lay down. flamekit quickly drifted to sleep but awoke a few moment later when breamstar got up to leave. even though the kit wanted to beg her to stay, flamekit was far too tired and knew that breamstar had much to do.
that night flamekit dreamed of two familiar starry figures that brought her heart warmth and closure.

prompt: [1000/1000]

The mostly orange tortoiseshell could hardly breath, as she searched her surroundings for an exit. Barely managing to jump out of the way in the time, as a burning branch came crashing down. Its bark now an ugly black, from where the flames of the fire had claimed it. Her body was now trembling, as copper eyes desperately looked for a way out of the burning forest. Before her gaze landed on a small gap within the fire. While the gap was indeed tiny, and put her at risk of being caught on fire, due to her long fur. Neither did she know, on what may lie on the other side. However, It was still better than waiting around for the warm embrace of death. Swallowing, Abbi gathered up what remained of her courage, before darting forwards. Small legs moving rapidly, as she raced towards her only chance of escape. Briefly feeling the warmth of the fire, as she leaped over it. Only to release a small sigh of relief, when her paws met solid ground on the other side.

Only glancing back briefly, before continuing to run down the pathway she had found. It wasn't until she got a decent distance from the fire, did she start to recognise the area she was in. Remembering what her siblings had told her, before they were separated. This was the very pathway, that led down to the ravine. Hope began to burn strongly within her heart, as she pushed her limbs to move faster. The sound of raging water below, was all it took to tell her she had reached her destination. Tears burning against her cheeks, as ash lightly dusted her fur." Abbi, over here!", a female voice called out. Catching the young she-cats attention. Upon glancing in the direction of the voice, she felt her tears start up once more. Mainly because she never felt more relieved to see her two older siblings, Jasmine and Jacob. The dark orange tabby tom was stood on the log that connected both sides of the ravine. While the pure black she-cat stood at the edge of it. Both siblings wearing relieved looks, as their younger sister dashed over to them.

" Come on, hurry!", Jacob called out. Green eyes glowing just as fiercely, as the fire behind them. Waiting impatiently, as the black she-cat lifted Abbi onto the log. Before running towards the other side. Abbi moved as quickly as her burning paws would carry her. Occasionally slipping from time to time. Due to the slightly soaked surface of the log, from past storms. Once all three were safely across, they were then met by another challenge. The steep slope they needed to climb. While both older siblings weren't struggling too badly, it was a different story for their sister. Upon noticing this, Jacob urged Jasmine to go on ahead and wait for them. Before sliding back down the slope to a rocky outcrop. Placing a paw down on a sharp edged branch, as he waited for his little sister to catch up. Leaving her unaware of his dark intentions. Now wheezing, Abbi used the last of her strength to make a final leap at the rock her brother was stood on. Only managing to catch the ledge, as her back legs dangled below her. Followed by fear, as her paws began to slip." Jacob, help me!", she cried out.

Chuckling darkly, the older tom simply shook his head. As he gave a small smirk towards his sister. For the first time in many years, Abbi noticed the dark light that had now clouded his green eyes." Sorry, sis, survival of the fittest after all", he replied. Before lifting his paw up. Allowing the branch to snap back to its original position. Abbi released a screech of pain, as the edge of the branch sliced across her face. Causing her to release her grip, and sending her tumbling back down the slope. Despite her desperate attempts, her claws failed to find a purchase. Before she felt her body meet open air. She could only stare upwards in horror, as she crashed through the waters surface. The rivers current pulling her down into the dark depths below.......

" Blazepaw?"

"Blazepaw, can you hear me?!"

" Blazepaw, wake up!"

" BLAZEPAW!"

---------

The tortoiseshell she-cats one eye snapped open, as her head sprang upwards. Taking in deep breaths as she scanned her surroundings, only allowing herself to relax when she realised she was safe. Glancing to the side, to look at the mostly white tom who was led beside her. Concern in his green eyes." Oh, hi, Frostsight", she said. Smiling weakly, as the left side of her face burned slightly. Reminding her of the diagonal scar that lay there, which had caused her left eye to be forced shut. It has caused some hindrance with her training, but due to her determination, she was able to push through it. However, it also acted as a reminder of that dreadful day. The very one, that reminded her of her brothers betrayal." Are you alright?", Frostsight asked. Snapping the young she-cat out of her thoughts. Before giving a small reassuring nod back, despite not feeling alright.

She hadn't told her clan about her dreams. The ones that replayed her memories. She always lied, and said that they were nightmares. She still felt bitter at what her brother did to her. Had he always been like that? Or did she annoy him so much that it caused him to try and kill her?. She didn't know, and right at that moment the bitterness turned to grief. Tears began to form in her eyes before she could stop them. The next thing she knew, she had buried her face into the mostly white toms chest. Much to Frostsight's surprise. However, he didn't hesitate to wrap two comforting paws around her, gently licking her forehead to try and calm her, as she cried into his chest.

" It's ok, I'm here, now..... I'm here"
