Name: Mau (the Egyptian word for cat)
Gender: Male
Collar Design: x
How did they lose half of their tail?: Mau used to be a royal cat, owned by the pharaoh of Egypt. He broke the pharaoh's trust by stealing a golden goblet from him. As punishment, the pharaoh sent his dogs (Pharaoh Hounds) after Mau to either kill him or banish him from Egypt. The dogs attacked Mau, leaving him with multiple injuries, including a partial tail. Mau fled before they could kill him, but the scars from the attack—which were both physical and mental— remained with him for the rest of his life. (86 words)
Personality: Cautious, calm, selfish/greedy, witty, confident, mean, doesn't like opening up to people, regretful/dwells on his past mistakes - Ever since he was attacked, Mau has been more careful about his actions. He takes precautions, and it is hard to earn his trust. Once he trusts you, he's extremely loyal and is willing to risk his life for yours. Most of the time, however, he is rather greedy and selfish, caring more about himself than others. He hates most people, and he thinks he is above others, even though he is no longer a royal cat. Mau has learned how to protect himself, as he is afraid of being attacked again, and he is actually a pretty smart cat. He knows how to beat his opponents in fights. Mau is hard to figure out because he rarely opens up to people. He hates talking about his past—he's ashamed of his actions, and he regrets stealing from the pharaoh. If he had never stolen from him, he would still be rich and well-known. He knows it wasn't worth giving up his fame and wealth for the goblet he took. He often dwells on his past mistakes; they consume his thoughts, filling him with shame and regret. He never makes the same mistake twice because of this.
Likes: Being wealthy, being famous, hunting, jewelry/treasure, food (savory > sweet)
Dislikes: Fish, dogs, his tail/other scars, water, sandstorms, being poor, not getting a lot of attention, scarab beetles, getting dirty, snakes, people, socializing, expressing his feelings/opening up to people
Fears: Deep water, dogs, cobras, being attacked
Quirks: When he's nervous, his paws start to twitch and he flicks what's left of his tail. After he eats salty/sour food, he scrunches up his face, licks the air, and paws at his face. He rarely snores as he sleeps, but when he does, it's quite loud.
Random Facts about Mau: Mau absolutely hates getting wet, but he also hates getting dirty. These two things form a never-ending cycle of annoyance with him—once he gets dirty, he also has to get wet to clean himself off. He usually ends up getting dirty again soon after getting cleaned off, so the cycle repeats itself. Mau is afraid of cobras because he was bitten by one when he was a kitten. Luckily, the bite didn't end up being fatal. He has two puncture wounds on his front right paw from the bite, and that paw has been partially numb ever since. Mau also has 6 siblings, but he was separated from them at birth. He hasn't seen them since, but he wants to meet them some day. Mau became the pharaoh's family pet after the pharaoh's wife bought him from a breeder. She bought him as a gift for her daughter. This was how Mau was separated from the rest of his family. He has a chipped tooth from when tried to bite a jewel as a kitten, thinking it was food. His favorite place is the Nile River. Although he hates being wet, the sound of the rushing water soothes him. He's been visiting the river ever since he was a kitten because he grew up near it.
Hobbies/Way of Living: In his spare time, Mau enjoys hunting (mice, birds, small snakes, lizards, and insects) and taking strolls around the city. He now lives in Constantinople (because he was banished from Egypt), but sometimes he sneaks back into Egypt to revisit the places he grew up by. He especially loves revisiting the Great Pyramids and the Nile River. Mau prefers to keep to himself, but sometimes he'll meet up with other cats just to see what they're like. This is very rare, though, because he believes he is above others as he was once royalty. Occasionally, during rough times, Mau is forced to beg people for scraps of food. He hates doing this because he doesn't like being perceived as being poor, but if he needs to do it to survive, he will. He values his life above the lives of others.
Mate: N/A—He prefers being by himself.
Favorite Quote: "Standing alone is better than being with people who don't value you." Mau relates to this quote—but not in a good way. He uses it as an excuse to justify how he thinks of himself as being too good for others. This quote makes him think it's okay for him to neglect others because he's 'better' than them.
