Second Chance Shelter is a dog and cat rescue where you can come to find a new member of your family. We rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes so they may have the chance to be placed into a caring home. All of our animals are special and deserve a chance to be happy with an owner that will care for them. The question is: are you ready to love them?

Why do they look a little nervous?||

Gotta make a good first impression.

Hitachi trembles slightly as shadows pass in front of his cage. Though usually fixated on his food, this morning he fixates on the humans. A lone finger sneaks its way in between the thin metal bars, and he creeps up to lick at it tentatively. It tickles as it rubs against his nose, and he’s tempted to purr before the hand moves on. His ears droop as he tracks the shadow as it passes from his cage. Cool light from the overhead fluorescents continues to glow down on him as he plops back down. Maybe not today…

But, oh! Here comes another shadow!— He bounces up again, and this time the telltale click of the cage latch echoes in his ears. Ah, it’s opening, it’s opening!— Oh wait, those hands are getting really close, abort ab— wait, no, good impression, good impression—

Hitachi forces himself not to shy away as the hands lift him up. They’re alot rougher than they usually are… Oh, a new face! Oh wow, their lap is warm, so warm…

The humans mumble around him, but he pays them no mind as a hand strokes his spine.

Hitachi’s one of those cats who acts more like a dog than anything else. He’s a playful, runty little thing, and it’s only through sheer grace that he’s never encountered more bullish cats that would tip this soft-hearted kitten over. He’s more so saccharine than anything else without a sarcastic bone in his body to protect him, so there are times where’s he’s just a touch… too gullible. He tries his best, though. He does love a good joke.

But, it seems as if his loving personality was the only thing going for him in his life. He’s had medical problems since he was a young kit. His initial breeder took him to the vet when he realized this tiny kit was starving for seemingly no reason. Hitachi has a moderate to severe form of EPI (lack of digestive enzymes) so he can’t take in the correct nutrients from his food. His breeder searched for a home for this kitty for months before Hitachi’s medical expenses for all of his food supplements became too much. Whenever the funds for his medication runs out, Hitachi appetite gets voracious, which ends up seeming almost adorable before his fosters or temporary owners find out the scary truth. He's nearly starved himself during his time in shelters more than once.

Why does he look nervous?
He was raised in an isolated environment. After years of deafening silence broken only by distant wails of similarly solitary felines, and the cold unforgiving feeling of concrete beneath his desperately hungry belly, Raini had gotten used to the gradual atrophy of both his mental state and physical health. The abrupt change in conditions have left him confused, and the memory of his previous home have made him wary. The shelter staff, however, seem optimistic about his progress; While he hasn't let anyone touch him just yet, he spends more and more time near the front of his cage. Someone even said they heard a meow come from his direction! It could just be a rumor though...
