Dear Mom,
Basic training is harder than I thought it would be. We work a lot, and there's a reasonable amount of yelling. That's okay, though. It was to be expected. There's a lot of hardworking men and women here, all wanting to take a part in defending our country. I'm sorry this note couldn't be longer, we only have 10 minutes to write to our families, and I still have to write to my siblings. I love you, and I'll write again soon.
Sincerely, your son, Daniel

Mom,
Basic training is getting a little easier. I've been promoted from maggot to botfly. It's a luxury being called Price instead of Pricetag. Everyone makes fun of me in the barracks, though. I have to admit, even during the Confidence Course, we all have fun with it. The Drill Sergeants love getting in our faces and yelling, but we're getting better at keeping bearings. I'm graduating in 6 weeks luckily, and I've never been more excited to climb out of hell and become a member of the Army. I think they're going to put me as an MWD handler, as I've heard them discussing my ASVAB score. A solid 93. They all seem surprised I didn't join the Air Force, or even the Navy. At least I didn't "waste my intelligence in the Marines" as they say. I'll write to you soon.
With love, Daniel

Hey Mom,
Long time no write. Sorry, I've been super busy with specialized training. I'm definitely an MWD handler, and from what my instructors have said, one of the best they've seen in a long while. I'm getting ready to deploy in a few months, out to Afghanistan. I have a partner now, her name is Flower. Real threatening, I know. I'll attach a picture in my next letter. Hopefully I'll be able to write once I'm in Afghanistan. I love you, stay safe.
Love, soldier Price

Mom,
Flower and I are well. We haven't lost any brothers yet. I've now realized this is why I joined the Army, to protect my brothers and my partner during war. It's hard. Really hard. There's a lot of screaming and explosions. Flower barely saved me from stepping on an IED this afternoon. I'm slightly scared, but I know my dog has my back. MWDs or bust.
Love, Danny and Flower

Dearest mother,
Sorry to have not written for so long. I stepped on an IED. Flower protected me from the most of the explosion. It still hurt. Somehow we're both alive. A lot of my brothers... They weren't so lucky. We had backup come pick up the survivors. There were four of our twelve members that survived. Flower was the only dog who survived, not quite sure how she did though. I'll be returning home soon. My injuries are pretty bad, I had a lot of shrapnel enter my side when the IED went off. I love you, I'll see you soon.
