I glance sleepily at the clock on my computer. I've been up all right recording and editing sounds for my friend, Aharon's movie. Ever since he decided he wanted to go to film school he has been recording these mini movies non-stop. Guess who he has be the recording engineer, sound designer, occasional cameraman and set designer? Me. I don't mind too much, I just wish he'd get a more professional mic. I sigh a bit looking at my laptop screen at the sound waves. There where so many pops in the audio. I swear its killing me slowly. That and the background traffic noise. I mean, it has a different pitch that the rest of the audio so its a tad easier to take care of, its still just a hassle. I scroll around some free audio websites looking for some good effects I can use. Both Aharon and I love horror movies so our mini movies tend to fall into that genre. Therefor the movies often need tons of sound effects. I don't mind at all. Making sound effects is probably one of my favorite part of my job. Well, hobby for now. I download a few sounds and get to work at trying to create an other-worldly screech/roar sound effect for the main villain... or was it ghost? I'm not sure. I think that Aharon is the only one who knows what is going on in one of these movies. I get the desired result by pitching and distorting the sound of a skidding car tire, a lion's roar mixed in with a few of my own roars then over lapping them. It took a while to get the pitch right but it worked out well in my opinion. You'd be surprised what you can do with just a few bits of audio. I lean back in my chair and decide to watch the footage one more time before I go to bed. To be honest, the camera was shaky, the lighting was a bit amateurish. (Maybe if he used a blue or brown tinted filter...?) and the acting wasn't great. Neither Aharon or I where good actors, although Aharon has been practicing and I... well, I can pull off a pretty good evil laugh but that's about it. So we usually have to cast Aharon's older brother, Baothan, his friend, Sonny and my girlfriend Lydia to be in the movie. Non of them are too thrilled about it but we can often coax them into playing the roles if we offer to buy them dinner after the shooting. (Because, hey, who can turn down free food?) I know our movies won't win any awards (and not just because only our families will probably see them) but at least it will have some great audio and sound effects.
