A story of this tolter and how they were involved with your Christmas:
Early morning frost gave the grass and naked trees a soft silvery shine as the sun started to rise. Sil had promised to take her little cousins to town so they could enjoy the parades. Many people dressed up their horses for it but she herself couldn't afford a sleigh to rent for that kind of thing. Typically a tradition, she just had other things that needed buying right now and couldn't spare any expense.
Her cousins were disappointed when she rigged up an old hay wagon for them to a pair of her more senior tolters, they had no decorations but still held their heads high, proud of their duty and work for the day.
Eight year old, Lizzie, held her sister's hand, a sad little 5 year old who had been constantly asking about sleigh rides since the snow had started early at the end of November. Lizzie understood better why every time her sister, May, brought it up that Sil only had a look of sadness. The hay wagon and her plain but gentle, undecorated, horses were the best she could do.
"I want to ride in a sleigh, like the song, Auntie Sil!" May begged as they took the ride to town, bundled up in some thick quilts to keep them from becoming too cold on the way.
Lizzie shushed her sister. "A wagon is better, May, we could pick up friends on the way who don't have horses or wagons. They'll have so much fun with us cause we have the room."
May looked thoughtful for a moment, debating it the rest of the way.
Lizzie caught the look of relief that Sil had shown for a moment. Glad that something could please her youngest cousin.

In town there were dozens of sleighs, most just one or two people seated, with a flashy horse to pull it. Ribbons, bells, bright colors of red and green. Sil's heart sank when May piped up, "Everyone else have such pretty horses, maybe someone will let me ride with them? "
Lizzie glared at her sister a moment before asking loudly. "Don't you want to ride with Auntie Sil? "
No response came and Sil didn't dare look at her cousin's right now, her eyes felt ready to let forth a waterfall of tears because she couldn't give her cousins a ride like they had hoped for all year.

With a heavy heart, Sil , Lizzie and Mat watched the parade. Some of the people got join in with their more festive rides, Santa passed by in his own sleigh, not pulled by a reindeer of any sort. Just a handsome gray pony with a ribbon adorning the incredibly short tail.

Seeing three sad faces in the crowd he slowed his sleigh and gently gestured for them to step forward. In an instant May was up in the sleigh and in Santa's lap, not needing any more encouragement than what he had given. Sil and Lizzie walked up to the sleigh together though Lizzie was eager to meet Santa, she wanted to seem mature like her Aunt.
"What are three lovely girls doing looking so sad on Christmas? "
May was the first to pipe up. "We don't get to ride in a pretty sleigh this year, I want to but we don't have one.."
Lizzie looked embarrassed "We-well! We have a hay wagon which is nice. But.. A sleigh ride was going to be a lot of fun."
Sil was too filled with guilt that she couldn't bring herself to say anything. What excuse could she use that May would understand?
Santa could tell how upset Sil was at that moment and let out a gentle chuckle. "well you know what? I have plenty of room for three more people to join me, my pony Schmette won't mind having more company. We can also talk about what you're hoping to get tonight."

Lizzie didn't hesitate to climb in the sleigh, Santa himself had invited them so of course it would be OK. "Auntie Sil, come on! You can't keep Santa waiting! " May said as she settled herself down beside him. Sil wiped her eyes a moment before climbing in to join them. She couldn't get out much more than a hoarse 'thank you' to him for such kindness. With a gentle twitch of the reins, his pony continued along in the parade with them all happily riding with Santa Claus himself.
