Story:
It was that time of year again, Christmas! It was Anna’s favorite time of the year; the joy, the snow, the sweet peppermint hot chocolate. She was bursting at the seams with excitement more than usual because Marie, her sister, had a big surprise for her. She’d saved up her money over the past year to afford two plane tickets to Europe. They were spending the next two weeks on an adventure in Germany. The first week they spent going to the Christmas markets, looking at castles, and even touring a wine vineyard. It was Christmas day, the two sisters were out and about which Anna found strange because everything was closed. But Mare kept telling her she had a special surprise for her.
Anna pulled her scarf up slightly as they walked away from the car they had just parked in a dirt parking lot and began to make their way down a muddy old road tractors used to get between the fields. Although it wasn’t really cold enough to snow the air was cold and the wind was brisk as it came rolling off of the fields around them. She walked closer to Mare in hopes they’d be warmer closer.
“Where are we going?” She asked as the excitement and curiosity began to eat away at her. “Just wait.” Marie gave Anna a small smile through the poker face she was wearing.
As they walked Anna took notice of the fences that started to line the fields. It was obvious they were going towards livestock. And as they went on little fuzzy friends began to greet the pair with a neigh and a flick of their tails. It didn’t take Anna long to realize they were making their way to the horse farm their cottage was close to. Anna began to try and think of all the things her sister could have come up with but her mind was blank. They made their way up the driveway to the courtyard of the barn.
“Wait here.” Mare ordered as she left her sister to stand in the middle of the muddy courtyard. She walked into the barn and Anna could hear voices speaking in German. Marie had told Carolina a lot about how growing up, her father was shortly married to a woman from Germany. Marie had picked up some of the language. The anticipation itched at Anna as Mare walked out of the barn with a burly white haired man and it made Anna smile as she looked him over. Despite the worn out dark clothes he wore he looked a lot like Saint Nick. They seemed to be deep in conversation and the man kept pointing to a field to their right.
“Alright, this way Anna!” Marie’s poker face quickly broke into a smile as she led the way towards the pasture. Anna had to do an awkward walk, jog just to catch up with her sister. “Ta DA!” Mare exclaimed, holding her arms out as if showing off a new won prize.
Anna looked at the pasture. It was almost completely empty aside from the flaxen dark blob out in the field.
“I don’t get it.” Anna looked at Marie confused. Marie rolled her eyes.
“The horse.” Mare pointed with annoyance.
“What about it?”
“It’s for you, you oblivious woman!” Mare took a breath before she continued, “It was all Teddy’s idea you see. He had come up with the plan for the two of you to come here and he’d show you what he’d done. That little chestnut there is his gift to you. He’d done research for months on finding the best breeder in Europe. Her bloodline comes from the harsh terrain of Iceland’s wilds. He bought her just for you.”
As Marie spoke the little chestnut trotted her way over to the fence line and Anna felt a lump forming in her throat. Even after his death exactly 6 months prior to that day, Anna’s husband Theodore was still surprising her with gifts. It felt as if in that moment the tragic blows of the that year had been soften slightly that Christmas Day.
