When Fairuza was born, she was born without any eyes. Her mother tried desperately to find her blind daughter a new pair of eyes. She looked high and low, but could not find any eyes suitable for her graceful daughter. Just when her mother lost all hope, she spotted two beautiful turquoise stones, glistening in the ocean water. Without any hesitation, she snatched up the precious stones from the water and ran home as quick as her legs could carry her. But by taking what rightfully belonged to the sea, without permission, she angered the ocean spirits. As the mother ran away with the stones, the sea spirits whispered a curse into her ears. The curse stated that her daughter must now see and feel the great pain the ocean must face, that now she must carry the weight, the pain and sorrow, of those around her, close to her. Fairuza's mother, not wanting her daughter to find out about her curse, told her, warned her, to stay away from the sea, fearing that the ocean spirits would tell Fairuza of her curse.
When Fairuza's mother passed away, she was so filled with grief that she disobeyed her mothers orders to stay clear of the sea. Just as her mother feared, the ocean spirits told her of her curse. Then and only then did all the pain of the land fell hard on poor Fairuza. She begged and pleaded with the sea, asking for their forgiveness, only to be rejected over and over. After many failed attempts, the ocean finally gave her a choice, and open window. "If you return what was stolen to their rightful owners, then and only then will I free you of your curse. Then you will be free of all the pain that surrounds you." Fairuza, not wanting to give up her option of sight, declined the offer. The sea spirits spoke for the last time, saying that the offer will always be open, and that the longer it takes for her to give back what was stolen, the more creatures feelings she will have to endure.
At first glance, you would not think that Fairuza was carrying the pain of the land on her back, she is very good at pretending that everything is fine. That she is fine. But in reality, she has a huge heart, that feels as if it's being torn apart by the world around her.
