Kleeare (klee-are) are a species of nocturnal equine found on the island of Nocte. Most of the predators on the island are diurnal, hunting during the day and sleeping at night. In order to avoid the predators, Kleeare have evolved to do just the opposite, sleep during the day and be active at night. Due to this, Kleeare have whiskers and large ears to help them navigate in the dark. Though their most notable feature is their bioluminescent spots, made of bioluminescent cells and hollow, pigmentless hairs. They use these spots for communication, similar to a firefly.

As a foal Johari was shy and mostly stayed with her mother, rarely trying to play with the other foals. She had always been close to her mother since she was the only foal her dam had ever been able to have. Her mother named her Johari, meaning jewel, and after Johari developed a habit for collecting gems and shiny things her mother began to affectionately refer to her as her treasure, or her jewel.
When she was weaned it was decided that Johari would be sold to another farm. Johari was heartbroken and hid in an unused stall, crying. Her mother found her and came in to stay with her.
For a few minutes they laid their silently, Johari crying on her mother's shoulder. Then Johari's mother got up and told Johari to wait for her. When she returned she had something in her mouth. She dropped it in front of Johari, revealing a small, green gem. Johari sniffed it and asked what it was. Her mother explained that it was green topaz that she had found the day Johari was born. 'Now it is yours, so that you will remember me whenever you look at it, and so that you will remember that you are, and always will be my little jewel.'
After that Johari kept the gem with her in a leather pouch at her neck at all times. She did end up going to the new farm, leaving her mother behind. But every time she feels her gem around her neck, or takes it out to look at it she remembers her mother and that is why green topaz is her favorite of all the gems and shiny things she collects.
