The skulls hoisted to his leather pack shone with a bright ivory polish to the bleached bone, the teeth cracked from use but still managing to look sharp, the shadowed eye sockets staring at the world around with a chillingly haunting gaze. The furry creature shuddered and flinched away from the empty skulls and fixed her gaze on the merchant's piercing amber eyes, feeling a wave of discomfort washing over her with a frightened gulp.

"My dear, you don't seem to be listening! This, oh yes, this could be the start of a wonderful change in your life!" he exclaimed, thrusting forward a wrinkled paper package that rattled with curious sound. The young traveler, though, wanted nothing to do with it, and shyed away from his discerning presence and away from his bartering offers.

【 how they got infected 】

A new disease had been spreading. It caused problems that occured mostly in the mouth area, turning saliva into a dark color and making it drip excessively out of gators' mouths, there is no control over the dripping. The disease had been spread thanks to a gator of the venom element, and it had been spread pretty quickly. Many were immune to the disease, but those who weren't were faced with the unfortunate "bleeding mouth" disease, as it was nicknamed. Rodderick's parents had been infected, sadly, and young Rodderick had been forced to watch the disease drive his parents to insanity. He had decided to live life on the streets, travelling and selling masks to those who could afford them, since after the outbreak masks had been sold out for a very long time.

"I don't like remembering," he said through his mask, eyes glinting in the candlelight. "I don't like remembering at all." Rodderick lay on an old, tattered, plush couch. "But I will tell you what happened."

"It was a few years ago when the outbreak started. The news spread like wildfire, everyone knew, everyone panicked. My mother kept the news away from me, she didn't like to see me upset. But I found out. The disease was everywhere, some gators on my block already had the black goo dripping from their mouths. It wouldn't be long before we had caught it.

"And we did. My mother caught it first. I noticed something dripping from her jaws, and pointed it out to her. She gasped, finding a towel to cover her mouth with, but the goo started dripping even more. It was uncontrollable. It went through the towel, and I watched her wail as she tried everything to cover her mouth. A plastic bag, even. It stopped at random times, but as I said, it was uncontrollable."

Rodderick sighed and closed his eyes for a second, as if remembering the horrid scene. He slowly opened his eyes and took a deep breath before continuing.

"When I caught it, I didn't panic. I just accepted the fact that I would probably live with this forever. I stood calmly, my whole life flashing before me. I made myself a mask to hide my face and to contain the goo. After a while, the dripping goo drove my parents insane. They kept wailing, clawing at their faces. I was scared, I hid in my room, my music trying to drown out the screams and yowling from my parents. Pretty soon, they asked me to leave and go start a new life, to leave them here.

"So that's what I did. Packed half of my stuff and lived as a nomad, making masks. Since masks were all sold out everywhere, they were at a high price for those who could afford them. Not many knew how to make masks, so here I am. Think I'm making a fortune? Haha, no. Just enough to keep me alive. Now go, I've told you enough."
