Personality: Sandy is an enthusiastic tolter dedicated to her work. She loves nothing more than a ride along the surf of the Irish beach she calls home. Most of the horses at New Wave enjoy their work as they have such stunning scenery to explore on treks and a cooling shore breeze in the summer. If it gets extra hot, as it has been recently, they take a dip in the breakers along the beach. The tolters have a variety of opinions of swimming in the sea, some won't go in past there pasterns, some love to paddle or even take a short swim if it's a scorching hot day, but none of them love it so much as Sandy. She could spend her whole day in the water even when it's freezing. It's so exhilarating the adrenaline rush she gets running straight in with teeth gritted against the bitterness of the water.

We think Sandy is so accustomed to and in love with the water because of her experiences before she came to us. She was rehomed to New Wave, but unlike many she did have a loving home for the start of her life and ended up for adoption due to unfortunate circumstances with the previous owner - who had a hard time parting with her and was more than happy to tell us all he knew about her since her birth. She was born a strong filly, eager to be up and running about, yet after a few months she injured a front leg with her overenthusiastic frolicking. The generous caring man was not going to give up on her so she had extensive rehabilitation, and this consisted largely of water therapy. She took to the water like a duck to, well, water! And at such a young age the swimming obviously made a big impression on her, probably helped by the fact that it was by far the most fun part of her treatment and rehab. When she came to us we decided to see if she'd enjoy a swim in the ocean, and we were quite surprised to find how much she loved it! There was just no going back, she's been in that sea almost every day since.

Sandy's easy-going and happy attituse to her work and gentleness with those she worked with quickly made her a favourite at New Wave, but this coupled with her love of water made the owner Kian fall in love with her pretty much immediately. Kian was always a fan of the water, and a keen water sports enthusiast, but he didn't get as much time to pursue that hobby due to his job. When she was still green and not yet allowed to be ridden by the public, Kian would wake even earlier than usual every day to canter her along the beach. She is one of those horses who never runs out of energy, and after an hour or two of hard work, she'll return to the stables panting gently, but she'll be ready to go out again very soon and thus is one of the best tolters we have at New Wave

That's enough about water, there is more to know about Sandy than that - ok, admittedly that is a huge part of what is important to her, but still! She is a very eager to please mare, loving praise and treats to encourage her. When being ridden in an arena she works best on her own, as other horses moving around her in all directions tend to make her nervous. However at any other time, such as i the field, she is sociable and friendly, if a little bit shy. Some of the other tolters are a bit jealous of how much Kian the owner dotes on Sandy, at the start especially so. However when she came out of her timid shell they couldn't help but love this gentle affectionate girl. Aside from all her new tolter friends Sandy has formed a close bond with the boisterous and playful Tiara, a Belgian Shepherd. There's so much more I could tell you about Sandy but I guess I'm starting to bore you so I'll stop there!
