Reptiles. He is a full-time herpetologist. This means he studies reptiles and amphibians. The scaly creatures are his passion and he wouldn't trade his job for anything. This viscet can memorise the scientific name for basically every reptile he knows of and will often use them in conversation. Sometimes it makes him seem like a know-it-all. But it's just a habit that he's used to since his job requires it. When he isn't in another country or in his back garden on the search for reptiles, there's only a few things he'll be doing. Researching reptiles, he doesn't like to read much but he will do anything for them. Maybe he'll be caring for his large collection of exotic pets, or using them in his sessions at public places such as schools. There's nothing he hates more than the stigma around reptiles and how they are misunderstood and underappreciated. Surely he doesn't spend his
entire life around reptiles thought? Of course not! He loves to party; he is seen as the biggest party animal in his town. If there's a party he can attend to, he's there no matter what. Some see it as a little strange how different he can be and many are surprised to hear he is a herpetologist.
When Ray was a viscling he was always playing outside. Usually not with other visclings but with reptiles and bugs. He was teased a little for this, but it was never extreme.
"Ew! Why would you play with those?" This common phrase and similar ones always upset him. He didn't understand what was wrong with it. The more he heard it, the more he realised that they just weren't as loved as fluffy animals. But they were still lovable and cute in his eyes. So, he made it his life goal
(however unlikely) to stop people, even the world, from seeing reptiles like this. At the time, Ray was young and couldn't have a job. Instead, he went to the pet shop and bought a lizard for himself; which he would use to convince his friends that they weren't 'evil' or 'ugly'. Which one did he buy? The blue tailed skink, without hesitation. He couldn't believe it when he saw a lizard identical to himself. He named the skink Jay because his tail reminded him of a blue jay. And how could he not give his reptilian twin a matching name? Ray still has Jay to this day and he considers him his best friend.
Eventually he was old enough for a job. At first, he had a lots of options. He couldn't decide if he wanted to own a pet shop, run a reptile rescue or be an exotic vet. After some research, Ray decided he wanted to be a herpetologist. It became his dream job in only a matter of minutes of finding out about it. He managed to get his job and after working as one for a few months, he remembered something. His life goal and the promise that he once made to Jay, and every reptile. Ray was going to end the negative views about reptiles. Once he was at home again, he thought. As he watched Jay, he had a memory of showing the little skink off to his friends when he was younger. That's it! The viscet was going to educate others by showing off his reptiles. Sadly, he realised that the main problem was humans but he could not speak any human languages. Later, a viscet friend of his gave him some advice. Ray could read and write, he could write to the humans. They also told Ray that the humans also have interaction sessions; this inspired him. He started out at a school with a mini whiteboard and pen. The viscet would write about the reptiles he had and reptiles in general; then he would answer any questions from the children. The star of the show? Him and Jay. The children loved how similar they were and even called them twins. It was also here that he discovered his love for children and his education sessions. He continued with this whenever he could. And it wasn't limited to schools either. Offices, parties, pet shops, vets and care homes.
