I was greeted by a new human today. She was small and dressed like the English-style riders at the barn. What she was doing standing in front of my stall, I didn't know. I blew out a breath of relief when my human walked over. "Hey Prince!" James said, stroking my muzzle and giving me a treat. I snorted, grateful for the treat. "This is Laura, and she's going to ride you as well for a while, okay?" he said. I bobbed my head, but I was wary. This girl looked experienced, but I knew I was not interested in her style of riding, and I moved into the back corner of my stall when I saw her tack. It looked so restricting, especially the complicated bridle. Once the tack was fitted on me, I tried to get used to the feeling of the new saddle and bridle.
Laura led me out to the arena with James trailing behind. I looked back at him and gave him a betrayed look, and he laughed, making Laura smile. We got to the arena and Laura attempted to hop into the saddle, but I sidestepped, casing her to loose her balance and fall to the ground. "Prince!" James said in a warning tone. I huffed a breath and stood still while Laura mounted. I shifted our combined weight on my feet, trying to get a feel for her seat. Laura asked me for a walk, but her legs were higher than James's, and her strange position caused me to jump forward into a fast trot. She asked me to slow, but I resisted, wanting to canter. The only thing that kept me from moving faster was the pressure the new bridle was putting on my nose and mouth. I finally slowed to relieve my mouth and nose. Laura stroked my neck and whispered nonsense to me, trying to get me to calm down. She sounded quite ridiculous, so I focused on James at the other end of the arena. He was setting up trot poles and small jumps that I had no interest in taking. I figured I would behave now and refuse the jumps.
Once Laura and I got used to each other, she lead me towards the jumps. We had already done the trot and canter poles. Those were easy, but the jumps didn't look in any way inviting!
