Brando gazed up into the night sky, neither minding the light mist that fell on their dense coats. As they watched the clouds break and re-form, their minds wandered aimlessly, drifting through past years. Interestingly enough, they were both reminiscing about their first meeting...
_______
-----Brando smiled as he walked into the bedroom alongside his master, Cal; Raya was already curled up in the bed by the window. Naturally, she was right in the middle.
"Good night cutie," Cal whispered, gently scratching behind the baby Viscet's ear. Brando's ears twitched at her voice as he gingerly stepped into the bed, maneuvering around until he could lay along the edge, careful not to disturb the peaceful, small brown fluff-ball. Cal smiled and rubbed her finger along the bridge of his nose,
"'Night boy." She whispered, before standing and climbing into her own bed. Brando gazed lovingly at the little Viscet beside him and smiled as he remembered their first encounter...
_______
-----Brando walked along the faint trail through the woods, closing his eyes and lifting his nose at a breeze. He loved walking through the woods at the back of the house in the evening, the weather was perfect and there was a small clearing where he could watch the clouds blow past as he waited for the stars. He'd gotten out a little late this evening, but it was still light enough for him to see. Not that he'd run into anything, he was in these woods so often he knew where most of the "hazards" were. Finally reaching the clearing, Brando settled in the grass and gazed upward.
-----Just as the last of the light began to fade and the stars began to peek through the pinkish haze, a strange noise caught the Viscet's attention. He perked his ears and stiffened, ready to spring into action. After a few moments he heard it again; it almost sounded like a fearful cry. Instinct took over and he got up, cautiously moving toward the edge of the clearing and the sound. He sniffed at the air and caught the scent of something faintly familiar - another Viscet. His ears swiveled back defensively as he peered around a bush at the treeline. The breath he'd been holding escaped as a sigh of relief when he saw a small ball of fluff curled up under the edge of the bush, shivering.
"Hey there, little one. What are you doing out here all alone?" He asked gently, lowering his upper half to seem less threatening.
"I-I don't know..." The baby replied weakly.
"Well c'mon, let's get you out of this cold." Brando said, carefully picking her up by the scruff.
_______
-----"Hey bud, you're back early..." Cal called as she heard the familiar -
smack- of the Viscet-door, turning around from dicing strawberries. Her eyes widened as she saw why Brando had come in so early.
"Oh, my..." She breathed, putting the knife down and snatching the kitchen towel.
"Put her down," Cal said; gently wrapping the edges of the towel around the shivering baby Viscet. After a few minutes, the baby relaxed and looked around. Cal grinned,
"Have you been sneaking off in the middle of the night and getting into trouble? Her eyes are almost identical to yours." She commented, playfully ruffling Brando's ears. Brando nudged the baby encouragingly and she got up, shaking the towel off before yawning as she sat down. She gazed up at Cal for a moment, then sniffed at the air and fixed her two-tone green eyes on the strawberry at the edge of the counter, Brando copied her, making Cal chuckle.
-----"You're going to need a name, little one." Cal whispered as she stroked the soft, fluffy fur. The little Viscet could care less of what was being said, there were strawberries in front of her!
Strawberries! Brando had only eaten one from his pile, then pushed the rest in front of his rescue with his nose, smiling as she eagerly pounced at them.
"What about Raya Matumaini? Our little Ray of Hope..." Cal asked, looking up at her loving brown fur-ball. Brando perked his ears and waged his tail approvingly.
"It's settled then. Welcome home, little Raya." Cal said, scooping the little Viscet up as she yawned contentedly, snuggling into Cal's arms and promptly falling asleep.
