Stars can't shine without darkness is something that she is told often, Essence knows the dark times well and understands emotions like they were her own. She is a very protective and caring mare who would be the perfect mother who would bring up a pretty sheltered foal as she would keep it in her view at all times and would never let him/her know about the cruelty of the world until she feels that they are old enough to understand. Essence is a very reluctant mare and often needs a lot of convincing to do something that she feels uncomfortable about but I wouldn't call her stubborn, just naturally anxious and a massive worry-wort. Essence can be scary when she is mad but she does have a pretty cool temper and a clear head.
