Mahiru Kobayashi [
]meaning - Ⅰ. broad daylight,
midday (Mahiru) ; Ⅱ. small
forest (Kobayashi)
Meeting Kin felt like an all-too realistic dream. Mahiru was in a daze - she never expected to meet another plumerian with wings and a halo. However, unlike herself, Kin had an aura of lightheartedness around her that Mahiru couldn't explain. Unfortunately, that dream was awoken by none other than Kin herself - with an air horn to the face.- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

date of birth: August 26th - also known as the luckiest day of the year astrologically (also in correspondence to Kin's birthday - May 26th) *around a year older than Kin
astrological sign: Virgo; since Kin is a Gemini, their relationship lies in placing security within one another, once a Virgo allows the other to commit to their friendship. Though at first it may be difficult, since they could be opposites in a lot of aspects, once they've successfully done so it's easy to say they'll be friends forever.
traits of a Virgo: analytical ; observant ; reliant ; precise • skeptical ; inflexible ; cold ; interfering
• theme song E 18: [ x ] a song with such an upbeat, lighthearted undertone and a matching one of melancholy - something that fits Mahiru rather well.

-----After meeting Kin, Mahiru was perplexed. Kin was different. Nobody sparked her interest just quite like Kin did. Countless prank after prank, Mahiru only thought of Kin as an annoyance, and a rather devious one at that. Their friendship - if you could even call it that - was solely fueled by Kin's neediness. Mahiru just wanted to get away from her at all costs, yet the angelic plumerian kept on finding her again.
However, one day something unexpected happened. A prank gone too far, and in turn, left Kin apologizing...a little too sincere. Mahiru was skeptical, but as time grew on, she began to notice how Kin differed from her original thoughts. She wasn't devious - perhaps just on the line of being extremely mischievous. With that, she also began noticing other aspects of Kin. She actually saw her as another child for once - rather then some sort of PPS-overlord of sorts. In many ways, she still is. But now, Mahiru was seeing Kin as more childish, if anything. The way she believed anything you said - her amusement with the oddest of things; Mahiru truly began to like Kin, despite her strange hunger for trouble.
And perhaps her belief in Kin went a little too far.
No matter what Kin said, Mahiru truly didn't care. It wasn't about being cold on her end, however. It didn't matter what Kin said to her, or anyone - she had grown to accept it as "Kin just being Kin." She didn't mind getting herself pranked every now and then. Kin's teasing didn't really affect her in the way it did before. With anyone else? It was a different story. She felt as if she owed Kin something, but she wasn't sure what. It was almost a feeling of pity.

Mahiru knew most of her life that she was called a devil behind her back. It was easy to tell between her appearance and the occasional scowl - the way most would back away despite not knowing her. But Kin was different. She was an angel. It didn't take long for Mahiru to realize that everyone has much higher expectations for angels. They expect them to be some sort of savior; incredibly kind and benevolent. But perhaps Kin wasn't the best descriptor of an angel, and Mahiru knew that all too well.
Mahiru's sympathy wasn't the type where they'd feel inclined to help another simply because of an incident. It was more of a sadness, a willing to be her friend and commit herself to the relationship. It acted as a push for Mahiru. However, she'd never admit this to Kin unless she wanted to know in the first place.
With Kin's innocence and likelihood to believe anything you say, Mahiru has an incredibly hard time trying to lie to her. The guilt is far too overwhelming. It's one thing lying to any other person - whether they be gullible or skeptical - but it's another lying to someone who's too pure and innocent to take a lie.
So if it came down to Kin asking why Mahiru was acting strange around her, she'd simply tell her. Even though she could string up some web of lies for Kin, she doesn't think it's morally right to do something to her like that. Her worst nightmare is Kin misunderstanding her sympathy, but it's better to end their friendship over something Mahiru couldn't control than something she could.
As they grew closer and closer, Mahiru noticed Kin leaving an awful lot more. Previously they would hang out for an hour or two - perhaps the occasional prank or two. But as they strengthened their friendship, Mahiru could notice Kin would always leave in a haste. She wasn't sure exactly why - dancing could wait, right?
Apparently not.
Mahiru truly never understood Kin's need to dance, but she's also never questioned it. It was something that was ingrained into her mind as just one of Kin's hobbies - so she wouldn't have a reason to question it. Needless to say, she was jealous that Kin couldn't spend as much time with her as she would've liked.
While she wouldn't admit it, Mahiru did quite a few terrible things in order to get Kin to go and do something with her. But after Kin complaining about getting grounded all the time and having to scrub the entire temple with a measly toothbrush, Mahiru realized what a mistake she made.
And as usual, she continued to let Kin do her own thing. It's not to say that Mahiru isn't jealous anymore - she still is - but she keeps those thoughts to herself for the sake of Kin's sanity.
However, Mahiru that jealousy is felt for different reasons. While Mahiru doesn't know that Kin's parents don't give her the affection and normal life a regular plumerian would have, she's still incredibly jealous. It's not fair to not want Kin to spend time with her family, yet complain about her life in comparison to how "fortunate" Kin's is. Sadly, Mahiru hasn't realized that yet.
Now, she cherishes every single moment the two spend together, meaningful or not, no matter how jealous she'll become. It scares her to think that, one day, Kin may never return from her parent's grasp.

xxx• occupation: Mahihru has no current job, only hobbies to keep up her free time. She loves urban exploration - exploring abandoned buildings and the oddities of her city is both intriguing and exhilarating. Mahiru is simplistic - complications aren't a part of her daily routine. However, exploring adds a sense of fantasy in her life - especially when Kin's around to explore with her. She's also fond of meditating - a way to recollect her thoughts - and making candles, perfect for atmosphere or late gifts. (Just, not for Kin. Plenty of oohs and aahs - until something catches on fire.)

[ unertain ] [ observant ] [ jealous ] [ quiet ] [ biased ] . . .Mahiru is the type of character that is set on a daily routine - doing the same things, talking to the same pepole, eating the same things. She's never been the one to try new things for the sake of trying new things - she does so when she wants to. Anything else that forcefully worms their way into her life is considered an annoyance. This is due to the fact that she thinks she can read people well. It is occasionally true, yes - but it's more of a vague reading. Anything that goes beyond that is usually inaccurate. Unfortunately, there's a large chance that if Mahiru didn't approach you in the first place, she has no business talking to you.
However, she's incredibly biased - even to her own self. There's always exceptions to her little rules inside of her head - but they don't appear frequently. A prime example is with Kin. She didn't like her at first. Yet, she felt if it was some sort of force that brought them together - so she tried to befriend her. It didn't work at all - it was more of a tolerance than a friendship. However, as she grew to learn about Kin's life, that changed. If she wasn't so intrigued with Kin in the first place, a friendship may've never happened in the first place.
This bias continues throughout - her judgments, the way she acts; it's mostly in the favor of her friends. She does have empathy; but it's limited to her friends or people who pique her interest - like Kin did.
Despite showing a cold shoulder to many, Mahiru isn't a soulless being. Unfortunately, in her situation, many think of her this way. She'll often have a blank stare or deadpan expression - not on purpose, of course, but it's simply her resting expression. To make matters worse, she doesn't speak often - she thinks things through rather than talking aloud. This can leave others walking all over her because she doesn't have an appropriate reply. Often without thinking replies through, Mahiru will say something questionable - so she's learnt to avoid that.
Overall, tries to convince herself that she doesn't care what others think, but it still gets to her every now and then. She's tricked herself into making herself think that it shouldn't bother her, and this has its benefits but also repercussions. She may be viewed as an admirable "nothing bothers me" persona, but not a lot of people get to know her before they realize that.
Throughout all these messy, unkempt thoughts, Mahiru does have peace somewhere in her life - doing what she loves, and being with Kin. Someone so lighthearted, innocent - it takes away from reality.
Even though Mahiru seems at peace, those who have known her well enough have doubted this. Without others, she's left to her own thoughts. There's no one there to talk to her or to make her laugh; no one to subside whatever she feels normally. As time goes on, Mahiru begins to feel more alone and alone. It's difficult for her. She longs for someone to be by her side, and without it, she's left to her own.
It gives her time to think over her decisions, but it also leaves her feeling rather lonely. She's not sure if this has ever been a good thing or not - perhaps she needs a break from socializing, but perhaps she gets too lonely time after time.
This is why she hates sacrificing time with others. While she does feel needy for attention, she's far too scared to ask for it or seek it out herself. Despite this, she gets incredibly jealous when no one will offer to spend time with her. It's an unbreakable loop that she's too scared to admit to doing.
In the grand scheme of things, Mahiru just needs more time to figure things out. So many aspects of her life is influenced by others around her, and she hasn't even realized it. She's not as independent as she originally thought. Even though she says "I'm fine, I'm fine" - perhaps she isn't. Everything she feels like this about is usually kept to herself.
As a young plumerian, it's hard to say how she thinks. A lot of it is influenced by others around her, and what she sees, hears, and reads. Unfortunately for her, many of that is over exaggerated - which leaves her with a false sense of reality. She doesn't know what to think for herself, so she relies on her friends for information. With that, she feels obligated to return it, either with favors, gifts, or loyalty - you name it. You wouldn't call her easily influenced, but she does take a lot of things to consideration, thinking them over afterwards. In reality, she's scared to mess up. Studying how others around her act gives her some sort of security. Knowing that if she tries to blend in with their type of behaviour, Mahiru hopes that more people will like her.
However, she isn't like most with following others. She doesn't follow trends, sayings, or the like - Mahiru will copy body movements, the way you write, or even how you talk. It's all odd tidbits that aren't really noticed consciously by anyone else. This stems from her observant trait, allowing her to believe she's analyzing others (accurate or not). While she is observant - looking at finer details, memorizing objects, she's not necessarily good with analyzing other plumerians.
Sadly, Mahiru's readings of others are usually incredibly vague and usually incorrect. This leaves her doubting others, feeling skeptical, and overall, incredibly self conscious. She wouldn't ever admit to this, though. It's all bottled up inside of her head rather than ever being said, among other things.
Throughout all these traits, Mahiru shares one common characteristic throughout. She refuses to speak up in certain situations about her thoughts, instead keeping them locked away inside of her head. Perhaps she's afraid of losing Kin to her jealous habits, or not taken seriously because of her bias. There are a thousand worries - and counting - that Mahiru could list. However, she's keen on keeping a neutral aspect on life.
However, some things can only be kept up for so long.

As a child, her terrariums aren't exactly perfect - but the imagination and freedom that comes with it is far better. She loves imagining that little ducks or fairies live in them, no matter how far fetched it may be. She doesn't trust Kin too well with them, but she doesn't mind a helping hand every now and then.

A terrarium is an ideal, perfect little world that could be built upon anything you desire. Perhaps all the effort Mahiru puts into them is a result of how she wishes everything could be. However, her explanation for them is just merely a hobby. She's a little too young to fully understand, but her intention is to make the terrariums perfect. Undoubtedly, she certainly wishes her world could be as pristine and simplistic as that.
Even though she takes a lot of careful time making them, they don't turn out anywhere near close to what she imagined. She's never thought about it, simply because she's just happy to be making them. They allow her imagination to run, which is a huge change. Mahiru's never been the one to fantasize about fairies, any sort of magic - but maybe she can take a few notes from Kin.The only reason why Mahiru hasn't actively believed in magic is because she thought she'd never felt "true" magic before. People would always talk about it in so many different ways and forms - whether it be pure 'magic' itself, love, magical dryads, friendship, the fairy tales you'd get told as a child. To her, it seemed like it was everywhere. Why was it so special if it was found in so many things? However, she didn't quite yet realize that it wasn't the same for every plumerian.
For the longest of time, she was struggling to understand how anyone could understand the concept of magic. However, she soon started realizing that it was staring her back in the face. Lots of things were magical - including her. How else would she have wings and a halo? She never truly made the connection that nobody else she's met except for Kin and herself had these traits.
In a way, she thought of it as normal - everyone else was just different. Now she's a bit more wary; she tries to blend in more, and is incredibly self conscious about all sorts of things. Maybe Kin helps with that, though. She now knows there's someone else out there that's like her. It's almost comforting, in a way.

flaws •
- her thoughts are highly influenced by others
(though this does not include her actions; she'll
often 'weigh' them inside of her head first)
- heavily relies on others for emotional balance
- often doesn't see the other side to a story
- always tries to mimic other's behaviour when
she feels like she's the odd one out
speech habits •
- uses redundant terms
(saying things like free gifts; an anonymous
stranger, etc)
- never knows the difference between too loud
or too quiet (more emphasis being on the quiet
part; she usually gets too loud after someone
tells her to speak louder)
- takes a little longer to respond as she's usually
thinking things over inside of her head
appearance & style: Despite it being something that many doubt Mahiru would focus on, her appearance is a large aspect of her life. Even though she's still a child, she tries her best to make herself look presentable as possible. More often than not you'll see her wearing a lot of red ribbon, cute animal-shaped hair clips, and dresses - it's mainly a part of her self esteem rather than vanity. That's one of the reasons why she likes hand mirrors so much - they're a bit more modest than full ones, in her opinion. And, not to mention, much more elegant.
In her opinion, it's easy to tell that some people act odd around her. Of course, she knows that not many other plumerians look the same she does, so it's almost justified. However, there's always rude plumerians - so maybe it's harder for her to say that. Nevertheless, her appearance is something that boosts her self esteem rather than trying to make others like her in this case.
quirks wrote:- fiddles with anything small or ordinary that she can get her hands on
(especially paintbrushes, string, straw, ribbon)
- sits on the arms of couches rather than the cushions
- knows a lot of random trivia about cats that she usually somehow
brings into her conversations

summary paragraph ; It's uncertain what Mahiru intends to do with her life. She doesn't have a lot going on for her, yet, she doesn't seem to be too fazed by it. She has Kin; her multitude of hobbies, even a few friends. Unfortunately, she's not aware that any of these things could soon disappear from her life, especially Kin. They may be friends - close ones, even - but there's not a lot of security in their friendship. Mahiru's never been familiar with such close friends, and she's sure Kin will one day have better things to do with her life. She won't give up everything she loves that easily, though.
