Chrysaora Basilisks #235 | Orphan Rescue Event

Postby noreptiles_ » Sat Jul 11, 2015 9:20 am

General Info
Chrysaora Basilisk are the prevalent equine creatures that inhabit the world Lucent. They roam by the hundreds, using their unique hooves to score the uneven rock and track down their most vital source of nourishment; evil. The relationship between Chrysaora and humans is a complex one. Chrysaora vocalize like horses, but are also thought to have a syrinx much like birds do and have been recorded displaying a variety of sharp, avian sounds. Their eyes layer over with a dark, murky black until their normal eye color pierces through in a great ball of electric light, radiating toward their victim's open eyes and paralyzing them. The Glare is able to stop both human and creature, and after a few days, unique to other forms of basilisk, the paralyzed being transforms into a sea nettle.

Here we go! The adventures of an adventurous alien and a baby lethal equine in space~ This was a lot of fun!

    First Encounter

Folkvangr had visited many unusual planets in their time as a recovery agent for the Federation of Inter-Space Peace, but Lucent was truly a remarkable one, only perhaps matched by the rusted wastelands of Virid and the glowing skies of home on P'leri-D. It was almost a shame this was only a quick detour on their way back home, an impromptu mission radioed in to them once they were in range of the planet. The local wildlife was apparently highly prized and just as lethal here, meaning the black market trade was booming. This time around the organisation that tried to stop these happenings had caught the trappers and wanted the rescued creatures brought to Earth to find new homes.

Finding their way through the intricate series of caves would have been almost impossible in the near-blackness if it wasn't for the enhanced eyesight of their reptilian true form, regardless of how unsuited the forest-dwelling Inhabitant biology was for the damp cave ecosystem.
It did seem to be deterring any potentially hazardous native life forms however, as more than once they'd caught sight of shadowy wings disappearing out of the corner of their eyes. The distant rumbling of something they assumed to be hooves had reverberated through the cave system several times already in the short space of time they had been here, accompanied by almost avian screeches. Somehow they didn't think they were horses.

They walked for what seemed a long time in the dark monotony of the caves, occasionally glancing up at the ceiling just to break the cycle. It was this way that they discovered the civilisation of this otherwise scarcely populated planet.

Ahead, waiting below a large gap in the roof and one of the extravagant structures that seemed to pass for houses on this planet in order to no doubt to escape the creatures of the darkness, were two figures who were very obviously the ones they had been sent to meet, even without their AI Zyanya whispering this to them in a mind voice like soft static.
A human figure, tall and lithely built with ashen skin and blonde hair. Clearly someone well used to living in the caves. Beside them stood something that almost appeared to be a horse at first glance, though the horns and vividly coloured mane and tail quickly dispelled that image. That and the yellow eyes that watched them warily even at the distance they were away from the two. Presumably this was an individual of the equine species they had heard earlier.
Folkvangr waited until as close as possible to gracefully assume their humanoid form, unwilling to take their chances with anything lurking in the dark, though their spines and reptilian tail remained as usual.
Raising a hand in greeting to the human, they withheld their surprise well as the two exchanged a look filled with far too much intelligence for the usual simple relationship between man and beast. These alien equines were telepathic? They weren't entirely sure how they felt about that.

Letting Zyanya's glowing projection shimmer into life on their shoulder as proof of their identity, they strode up to the unlikely pair
"I am Agent Merope Folkvangr of the FISP, and this is Zyanya. I understand I am to escort you and your live cargo off-world?"
"Hi, thanks for coming." The tall blonde leaned forward to shake hands before gesturing to her companion. "I am Clare, and this is Sea on the Horizon. She's a Chrysaora Basilisk, a native species to this planet. We intercepted a illegal transport of Chrysaora foals and whilst some have been rehomed on Lucent, they'd be easier to rehome in the secure environment we already have established on Earth." She pointed behind her, to a rather bedraggled-looking large group of foals and several wary looking humans. These people weren't taking any chances again, clearly.
Folkvangr nodded, swiftly calling the ship to their location. They weren't too fond of the idea of staying in these caves much longer.

There was no night on the ship, of course, but most of the crew were sleeping and a restless Folkvangr was prowling the halls in their Inhabitant form. The passengers they'd picked up on Lucent had opted to stay with the foals in the stables of the cargo hold, which to be honest closely resembled Lucent anyway.
Drawing closer to where the stables had been set up, loud noises became obvious to Folkvangr's heightened senses only seconds before a small grey foal rounded the corner and crashed straight into the startled Inhabitant, pursued by a frantic looking Clare.
Shaking their head to clear it, they assumed humanoid form once more and looked down at the Chrysaora foal, who seemed to have suddenly become very interested in the glowing patterns on their leggings. Clare stopped in her chase, folding her arms and smirking at the two.
"That little one really likes you. Bolted straight out as soon as they heard you coming."
Folkvangr blinked rapidly, meeting the foal's inquisitive red eyes. "I seem to attract lethal equines. Already own a bunch of hell unicorns." They sighed in response.
Clare raised an eyebrow, clearly not having expected the agent to have a history with equines. "You've got horses? Back on Earth?"
"Yeah, I own a stable. I have three Narakari, like big tricorns from hell? Two mares and a stallion. We compete a lot."
The Lucent-dweller looked pensive, glancing over at the affectionate foal who was currently trying to nibble the spines of the Inhabitant's tail.
"I think you should take one of the Chrysaora. Particularly this one. We're looking for good homes and you have good experience with horses. Not to mention they seem fond of you." She explained slowly, trying to judge their reaction.
Folkvangr's amber eyes widened almost imperceptibly, though they feigned nonchalance with a quick shrug before responding. "I'll take this little one home. Gotta say, they'll be quite the outsider though."
The foal prodded their legs with their horns, clearly not bothered by their words. The alien smiled down at the little creature.
    "Hmm. Then they'll be Outsider."

    Gaining Trust

Folkvangr was painfully aware of their stallion Ciardha's carnelian gaze being fixed on their back. It had only been a few days since they had returned from Lucent with the rescued Chrysaora foal they had dubbed Outsider, but if what they had read about the species was correct then they were roughly of the age to be considered a yearling today, standing just over 14 and a half hands already.
Outsider had grown rapidly, and had already warmed up to their new home and Wyrda, Freki and Ciardha, the existing occupants of Folkvangr's stables. Their personality was already becoming very apparent; curious and fierce but very skittish, it almost mimicked the Inhabitant's own. Right down to the almost avian trills they were fond of happily vocalising at any time. It was impossible for Folkvangr to not love the equine after their own heart, after all.
They were still very jumpy, and any attempts to get them to leave the stall for long or get a head collar on them had only resulted in a very shrill avian noise and an overwhelmed hypersensitive alien, but they were already clearly fond of their rescuer and loved to sneak strokes whenever possible.

Freki, the youngest of Folkvangr's Narakari and closest to the Chrysaora in age, snorted and moved closer to the door. It was clear the blue roan was trying to coax the yearling out, so Folkvangr moved back a couple of steps from where they had been stroking their ears and held a hand out to offer another stroke.
Cautiously, red eyes fixed on their hand, Outsider moved a couple of steps forward and nuzzled at the offered hand, seemingly unconcerned by moving closer to the door. The alien shifter held their breath as they moved back again, and once again the yearling followed. Freki nickered softly from behind them as they reach back and unlock the stall door, coaxing Outsider all the way. The dark-coloured Chrysaora does not look away from them, following far into the field and trilling a greeting to the other equines.
Folkvangr grinned and patted the yearling's neck, proud they had finally trusted them enough to leave.

    First Feeding

Outsider is far less wary, that is obvious even to Folkvangr, who had been the only one trusted by the Chrysaora from the beginning. Instead they are regal, almost aloof to the few others who have stopped by in the short time they have been in Folkvangr's stables. The silver dapple is still skittish, easily startled by loud noises and strangers, however the alien shifter is hardly bothered by this anymore, being easily startled themselves.

For the time Outsider had been here, Folkvangr had given them their feed in a bucket, not entirely sure of how trusting the yearling was towards them. But the actions of the Chrysaora yearling just the other day, in following them out to the paddock for the first time (with the aid of Freki, a young mare of Folkvangr's Narakari), finally gave them confidence that the yearling trusted them almost entirely.
Obviously, the Chrysaora fed mainly on sources of evil, but the alien's true neutral temperament and total apathy to most situations was hardly suitable for this. Instead they had been fed quantities of a recommended feed and the occasional treat of carrots and oat biscuits, things the Narakari were fond of.

Now they stood in the paddock, lightly tapping against the feed bucket in a way they knew the equines could hear from the stalls.
Excited by the prospect of food, the leggy yearling came barrelling over to where Folkvangr stood, nearly tripping over their own feet as they did, much to the alien's amusement. Waiting for them to reach them, Folkvangr held out a biscuit to Outsider, making sure to keep their thumb tucked under their hand to avoid any biting accidents.

Outsider didn't wait a second, trilling in contentment as they gently took the biscuit from Folkvangr's palm.

    The Void's Leviathan

It had been 3 weeks since Folkvangr had taken home the orphaned silver dapple foal they had named Outsider from the cave planet Lucent, and the two were nearly inseparable. They had yet to attempt the Conjoining ritual, but since Clare and Horizon were stopping by that day Folkvangr had thought it far safer to attempt with the more experienced pair present.
Now the blonde woman and the yellow-eyed Chrysaora leaned against the fence on the outside of the paddock, ready to spring into action if something went wrong, regardless of how ineffective their help would likely be against the Glare.

Keeping their face neutral, the alien strode slowly towards where Outsider watched through ruby red eyes, keeping their own amber eyes open and fixed on the Chrysaora that had become such a part of their life in the last month.
Outsider trilled, pawing nervously at the ground as they approached and sunk into a deep bow, eyes now facing the ground. Folkvangr had never been one to shy away from a challenge, but even they were afraid at the prospect of this going wrong.
They held their breath for what seemed like an age, until the lightest touch of Outsider's horn on their shoulders reached them, along with the ghost of a thought in their mind.

    <Hello, space-friend.>

The Chrysaora with a mane like the stars they had been travelling through when they met. Folkvangr smirked, thinking of the game they had unconsciously referenced when they had named the then-foal, leaning into their shoulder.
"The Outsider, self-proclaimed deity of the Void. How fitting for you. The Void's Leviathan."
