XHOLI 3

Postby kivr & fireflii » Thu Jun 04, 2015 7:55 am

Tall, lean frame, round ears, and bright eyes, Xholis are diurnal, hierarchal, and intelligent species that wield the forces of nature. Xholis are social animals that can be recognized into 2 different clans. The ones that hunt at dusk, and those that hunt at dawn. Their pelt reflects their environment as the Dusk hunters tend to have darker palette while the Dawn hunters are significantly lighter. Between those two clans, the species are once again split into more diverse and specialized packs. Fire, Earth and Water are the most common forces of nature that each Xholi wields. The gem they are born with determines their attribute, which is effected by the parent's gems. Every Xholi is given a role befitting their status in the pack, and the leader of the each pack is expected to keep the peace.

Sentinel Savant - Dawn Dunia Pack

Congratulations!
Kami and I both liked that you came up with a story that describes the Xholi's markings and a in-depth
view of Thala's personality. It attracted us more to your form that her personality was like a double-edged
sword - especially as her role as a Sentinel Savant.

How did they become a Sentinel Savant?:
"A sentinel must have two paws firmly planted on the boundary line," said old, wizened Sentinel Vizier firmly.
"Those paws must not waver, even in the face of adversity. A sentinel is an extension of the boundary line. To crumble is to break the line and leave your home defenseless. You must be brave. You must be watchful with all of your senses. And most of all, you must be diligent!"
"Yeah, yeah," muttered newly-Apprenticed Khuthala, but not loudly enough so that anyone could hear. She was young, she was unformed, and she was without much direction. While all of the other young sentinels stood at rapt attention, drinking up information, Thala slouched. She was regretting her decision already. She could have been a scout, or a gatherer, or something. She had always been told that being a sentinel was good, strong, sturdy work; just what she was made for with her big build and strong senses. And, of course, if that was not enough, the gems on her front paws were a dead giveaway. According to the adults, in any case. So there she was. She wondered, vaguely, if the scouts still had any Apprentice positions... Oh, but of course, Thala had two left paws and the subtlety of a falling boulder.

And there she was, quite some time later, as a fully-fledged sentinel, with plenty of knowledge but little enthusiasm. But, she supposed, that was alright, since she never saw any adversity anyway. It wasn't as if creatures were thronging to attack, Thala thought irritably one hot and dry Summer day, despite what Savant Vizier was always saying. All she had to do was plant her paws, maintain her boundary, and wait to be relieved after her shift. It was easy work. Monotonous work. Couldn't get much wrong, but couldn't shine, either.
And, boy, was it hot.
Thala shook her head, and snapped open her eyes as something ran over her paw. A small rodent. She made a lazy swipe at it - more out of a sense of obligation than of hunger - but it ran right past her without even looking back. It was followed by another, and then a flurry of reptiles.
'Strange,' Thala thought. It was also strange that the sky seemed to be darkening, long before dusk, and the heat grew only more stifling. Come to think of it, the air was thick and smelled acrid. Almost like -
Almost -

"Fire!"
It wasn't Thala who raised the call. It was another Sentinel, probably Morte. Count on Morte to steal the thunder during the only interesting thing to happen to the pack in who knew how long. Thala wished she had thought of it herself, but dutifully sent the call along the lines.
"Fire; fire!"
She sat back, and did what she usually did, which was to watch and wait. She couldn't see the fire. She could smell it and feel it, but there were no flames. Still, she was restless, but resisted the urge to pace. It was not her job to leave. It was her job to stay still. It was her job to watch and defend. But there was nothing she could do. Not against fire.

More animals came in steady streams, steaming, with wide eyes, red nostrils and ashy marks on their bodies. Then none came at all. But still Thala held strong, and watched. She heard coughing from around her, and crashing, and the calls of 'Fire!' got further and further away.
'Oh, good,' she thought in vague relief.
'Means I can go too.'
And she almost did. Almost. But then she remembered a small group of hunters passing by her that morning, gossiping and laughing -
heading straight for what was now an inferno.
She paced up and down her boundary line. To leave? To stay? To risk her own skin for an invisible other? She lifted one paw off of her boundary line, but just as soon dropped it down. The fire was crackling and roaring in front of her, and the smoke and heat made her eyes stream. But through it all, the gems on her paws weighed her down. She could not leave.
"Here! This way!"
Were there other xholis out there? She could not hear anything over the growl of the flames, could not see anything through the smoke, could not smell through the ash. But still she kept to her post. Thala sent out her mind, and tore vegetation out in a clear path before her, for any of her packmates trying to return home.
to protect you must destroy
When a wall of ash and smoke and sparks, carried on the wind, roared towards her at chest height, she raised her head tall and anchored her paws.
a sentinel must plant their paws
She stood there until, coughing and hacking, her legs gave out.
a sentinel must be diligent. I am a sentinel

Many days later, Khuthala came to in the Healer's den, and got a sound rap on the snout for her troubles.
"What were you thinking?" the Healer demanded. Khuthala, with a throat still raw from the smoke, rasped out -
"Waiting."
"For what, pray tell?"
"Hunters."
"They were back hours ago, you fool! Why didn't you check!"
"Because," she coughed, "sentinels don't leave."

And she meant it. And continued to mean it. The fire had singed her legs and tail, and that fur grew back dark and coarse. But when she went back to her post, her slump was gone. The ambivalence had left her eyes. Her ears were always perked, her nose always twitching. She was first to her post, and last to leave. And whenever she walked past a young apprentice, whose expression was bored, and muttered,
"Yeah, yeah," in response to a Savant's lecture, Khuthala was the one to take them aside after a class, and explain and emphasise and even show a young Apprentice what it meant to take proud in their role, over and over until they were as convinced as she was.

It was this persistence with the younger generations, this empathy and focus, that singled Thala out for a Savant position. And it was her dedication to her job, and to producing sentinels who would hold their post no matter what came at them, that caused her to accept it.

name// aino
meaning// a scandinavian name found in many epics, means "only one"
gender// male

Recollections of my childhood are foggy at best, much of it was spent in a state of frustration and boredom causing most of my memories to blur together. However, I do remember my induction into the working force of our clan; I remember it very well. Restless as a pup, I was constantly searching for new adventures and risky endeavors; this resulted in a long series of accidents which immobilized me for much of my childhood. I sustained quite the nasty leg injury from falling down a ravine when I was near a year old. Because of this relatively atrocious timing, my apprentice options became absurdly limited… more specifically, I could either be a sentinel or a pup sitter. My parents pushed for further recovery time on my leg, which I strongly objected to - even with a weakened leg, my desire to move out shone any logical concerns. Our pack is home to very strong willed savants, those well versed in the customs of our clans yet firm in their handling of the young, and so they saw my delay in becoming an apprentice as unnecessary. In hopes of a compromise between my parents and the savants, I was put under the apprenticeship of both a pup sitter and a sentinel. My time split so that every other day was spent with the other mentor, as to not wear me out physically. The extensive time sitting down was both a godsend and a curse,as my legs grew accustomed to slow steady walking, that of a guard, and the gentle patience of handling pups. Even after my leg had healed, I continued to share my time and worked under both mentors. I ended up working longer than most, due to my injuries - of which I experienced more of… the other sentinel apprentice and myself were always causing mischief, as guarding can grow dull when you’re a young pup. I am thankful for both of my jobs, as they taught me skills which transitioned over to each other and, more importantly, led me on the path I am currently on. In the least vain way possible, I take pride in my measured tone and abundant patience, both of which I earned in full. Nowadays, I work as a savant, something which was an obvious choice for the clan to make. Though I may still walk with a bit of a limp, and if you ask me to run long distances I’ll surely laugh in your face, I’ve learned to be a dutiful guard and a empathetic mentor. More importantly, spending your days with pups is pure fun.

Name:
    Rae

Meaning:
    Her name means wise protection.

Gender:
    Girl

How did they become an Sentinel Savant?:
Nimble paws don’t make for a strong stance.

    But I can fight.

A lithe form can’t be scary.

    But my growl can be.

How can you protect others when you’re barely strong enough to beat a yearling?

    I’ll learn, I’ll try.

You can’t beat a mountain lion with a blow or a bite. For yours has no power.

    I won’t let it win.

So what will you do? Why not just turn tail and run?

    NO!

So stand down and accept your fate, allow the pups to die.

    I will not!

You can’t save them anyways. Give up.

    I can! I’ll find a way!

What are you doing? Why are you fighting? I said give up.

Well I don’t answer to you.

The voice in my head refused to shut up as I tried to lure the big cat away from where the pups were hidden. Every part of my head was screaming at me, for being selfish, for taking the job I wanted and not the one I was built for

My mind was racing, trying to find a way out. And then it clicked.

Right there, everything slowed down but me.

With a flare of my power that I had never thought possible before that night, I pulled a chunk of earth straight of the ground, but I didn’t strike the cat with it as it had expected.

Instead, I used that earth as a platform, to jump not onto my enemy, but to a tree.

Now, Xholis were not made to be climbers, but those nimble paws that brought doubts, they gripped the branch and somehow I managed to haul my little body up.

Slowly, as the mountain tried to figure out what I was doing, I moved higher and higher on the tree, pressing my lithe form to it. I had a few seconds head start, but it wasn’t much as the cat snapped back to its senses and let loose a roar before hopping into the tree after me.

Every part of me was tense, but I held my position as I watched the snarling beast race up the trunk towards me.

    Closer. I tensed my body.

    Closer. I prepared myself.

    Closer….

    And I lept.

It was hard, my position on the tree branch was awkward but I managed to twist my form and never had I been more grateful for my agility.

All my force and my weight came crashing down on the startled cougar who had figured out my plan too late.

The two of us fell through the tree branches, the cat tried to twist to land on it’s feet but my jaws were gripping it’s scruff too tightly.

When the two of us hit the ground, it was I who came out on top. My teeth dug into it’s neck as I tried to use the landing to my advantage, but I didn’t have to.

    The fall had killed it.

Slowly, I stumbled back from it’s body, looking at it’s empty eyes. There was a scratch along my side but I couldn’t feel it.

What I could feel was eyes.

I turned around to see a dumbfounded patrol, watching me in silence the pups peered out from from their paws where they had clearly just taken refuge.

My mind slowly returned to me and I recognized the third member of the patrol, the one who no earlier than this morning had told me about how unfit I was in my role as a sentinel.

And suddenly, I felt triumphant. I raised my head high, a smile on my face as I put on my best ‘reporting for duty’ voice and said “The threat has been taken care of.”

Later that day, I would tell my story to the apprentices and pups with such pride that I might have been able to fool myself into thinking that I wasn’t terrified throughout the whole thing.

It was early the next morning I was called to see the liege. Worry swirled in my mind as I saw my former savant, the only one who had been willing to take me on standing by them. Both wore serious expressions.

What I had been expecting I didn’t know, but it wasn’t what I heard.

After a moment’s pause, my liege spoke.

“Rae, would you be interested in a savant position?”

I couldn’t speak, I had always wanted to be considered worthy of one, and I loved pups, but how could I accept. I had managed something one time, it was a fluke. So that was what I said.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t think I could take one. Managing something one time doesn’t make up for my size or strength.”

That should have been it, but my liege had other ideas.

“No, managing something once doesn’t make a savant, but that’s not why you’re being asked to take the position. Again and again you’ve proven to be attentive and quick thinking, and despite your lack of natural talent you’ve progressed quickly as a defender. Your victory over a cougar has proven that, and since you’re already quite popular with the pups, I can’t think of someone better to become the new sentinel savant.”

From beside him, my former mentor added “That, and it’s high time that someone teach these kids that there’s more to being a sential then foolishly trying to be a wall. It seems to me like you’d be perfect to pass that lesson on to them.”

I could believe my ears, but I knew my choice. Even if the voice in my head screamed at me not to, that I was ruining those pup’s future. A smile I couldn’t help took over my face I was looked my liege straight in the eye and replied.

“I accept.”

Name:
Meliai

Meaning:
From Greek Mythology, Meliai were at type of nature/tree dryad or nymph that existed within ash trees. They where known for watching over baby Zeus as he was hidden from his father. Meliai was given this name because her dark sock pattern made her resemble an animal emerging from burnt ashes.

Gender:
Female

How did they become an Sentinel Savant?:
Meliai was an apprentice when the territorial issues arose. Dusk Maji pack hunters continually crossed the boundary line to catch prey that ran across in Dawn territory. At first nothing was done because hunting at night was their speciality and the prey was from their land. However, the Dawn Dunia'a reluctance to confront symbolized thwir acceptance with border crossing to the Dusk. Soon every night during the Sentinel patrol shift changes, Dusk Maji hunters would ignore the boundary and hunt in Dawn land. When the Pack Leader discovered this he increased the training of new apprentices and the number of patrols at night.

Sentinel Savant Lanae was Meliai's mentor. Every morning he would request her presence in the thickest part of the forest. Upon arrival she was to attempt a sneak attack on Lanae, but every time he would sense her and slip right out of her path, causing her to plummet in the ground.

"Savant, why do we do this every morning when I know I can never suprise you?" Meliai asked, spitting dirt out of her mouth.

"Because you must learn to sense not with just your ears and eyes, but your touch. Using your gem you must feel the earth below you. Notice it's stagnant feel, the power welled up inside..." Meliai clenched her paws, excited to begin lessons on earth abilities when a small rock collided with her forehead.

"Hey! Was that necessary!"

Savant would chuckle and reply, "Of course! You need to learn to feel the vibrations in the earth to be able to sense what is going on around you." And then they would continue practising, feeling for the presences of rabbits scurrying, leaves falling on the forest floor, and even the pack scouts running around to deliver messages. Meliai would practice every day and eventually she discovered that using her earth powers she could send out her own vibrations to identify the being without having to find it like she did with Lanae. Meliai was a natural due to her gems being so close to the ground on her legs, but she still could not understand how sensing vibrations was useful when being a Sentinel guarding the borders.

She got her answer moons after becoming one of the working class.

Meliai was patrolling the area closest to Dusk Maji territory. Nothing happened as usual and as her replacement was headed this way to give her a rest, she decided to find a nice patch of grass to lay on. As Meliai stretched out her paws and began to settle in a comfy position, she felt something. It came through her paws, like a vibration of the earth. She took her stance and placed her sensitive paws on the earth, waiting to feel another signal. Soon after a rush of soft paw steps could be felt through her gem. She sent out her own vibration all the way to source of the first vibration to discover the threat. The impulse passed through the earth and up through the paws of three Dusk Maji hunters, unbeknownst to them.

A fourth presence also appeared and by the solid movements it had she could tell it was her replacement and Savant. She snuck over to him and signaled the trespassers' direction. The two ducked behind a a large bush, ready to bound out at any moment. Meliai felt them coming closer and as she heard the youngest apprentice snap a twig she and Lanae hurled out with vicious howls. The surprise caught the hunters off guard, but with their experience they understood not to confront and began backing towards their territory, but the apprentice didn't know better. He was so startled that his fear activated his powers of water. A huge gush of water rose from his feet and slammed right into Savant, knocking him back into a tree. The hunters gasped and forced their apprentice down, growling at him for his stupidity. As Meliai ran to help Lanae, the three Dusks headed back to their pack, and it was the last time we had border issues with them.

Savant landed hard on his hind leg and could barely walk, so she helped him and they limped together back to camp. The Healer took Savant in her den and the Pack Leader asked Meliai to explain everything. Walking to his den and he told Meliai something that forever changed her life.

"So Meliai, I know you have learned everything you know from our Savant Lanae, and with his old age and new injury it has been decided that he is ready to retire. A new Sentinel Savant is usually chosen by the most experienced of the class, but because you are the most skilled Lanae told me that recommends you for Sentinel Savant. I know you will do great things Savant Meliai, continue to keep our borders secure." Meliai was shocked, but she accepted her role and along with it the duty to protect the Dawn Dunia using all of her senses to guide her.

Name:
Moriko
Meaning:
Moriko is a Japanese name which means "Forest child"
Gender:
Female
How did they become an Sentinel Savant?:

"There is an abundance of pups this season, even you know, we need more responsible Savants."

"You may be correct, but we can not afford to loose any hunters or pupsitters."

"What about one of our older apprentices? There is one who have performed exceptionally well in all working classes, but seems unsure or which path they wish to follow."

"The one who performs exceptionally well in the working class... Moriko, yes?"

"Yes, Moriko."

"We still have a few months until she is capable of working, and even then she is rather young to be teaching."

"If she is capable of teaching, she will teach."

"Very well. We will offer her the position when she is old enough."

~

And so, when Moriko was old enough to choose her position, she was taken aside and offered a position as Savant.

Moriko accepted, and has continued to learn and grow herself as she teaches others.
