And the moon hung high in the sullen sky;

A dark mare's anguish
Shattered the night
And filled the air with the dread of the birds

The dread of the birds as they fly.

As she took her last breaths
A figure stood up
On wobbly legs and ghostly winds

And she let out a call
A shivering call, they say
And she leapt away

Leaving her dark mother behind.

No prints were found
The dark mare lay still
But her filly was nowhere in sight;

But on the nights
When the wolves all flee
