what do they fear the most? -
Many things keep her up at night, the fear of being alone, the fear of people not liking her, bad memories from the past, but the worst thing of all is the fear of certain questions, questions she distracts herself from thinking about.
When it's late at night, and the monsters in her mind are taking over, sometimes she'll start to wonder. 'What if I'm not real? What's my purpose? If I were gone tomorrow who would care?'. These thoughts can take over her mind and have plagued her since she was small, but what makes them her worst fear was there were points in her life where she knew the answer to some of them and it wasn't the good sort of answer. There were points where if she had vanished the next day then no one would have cared, there were times when she was completely without purpose, and she's terrified of the thought of going back to that.
When the stars go dim-
There are points in everyone's life, when the stars stop twinkling. Obviously the stars don't actually change themselves, but the way you see them does. During these times, things can seem very bleak or be bleak and when you look at the stars, you don't see the twinkling balls of light and life, you just see dots in the sky. There has been many such times in the life of Kumbukani, but there has only been one time when she learned to see the twinkling again.
All the stars in the sky had dimmed that night, as she ran. What she was running from she couldn't quite say, there was a thousand things she didn't want to go back to and a thousand more that might be lying in wait for her ahead.
Her paws were covered in blood, only some of which was her own, her fur was covered in soot. Every so often she would glance over her shoulder to see if she was being followed, but despite her fears there was no one there.
Finally there came a point where she could no longer run, so she fell onto the soft forest floor. Kumbukani had stopped in a glade, and after laying down for no more then a few minutes, she pushed herself up again. When she turned her head up, she noticed the stars above her. Having spent most her life before now within cities walls, she had never seen them as numerous as they now were. However not ever the stars could bring her joy in that moment. For the stars didn't grace her with twinkling light, they didn't dance across the sky for her. Instead they stood still.
In that moment there was nothing she wanted more then to see them dance. She wanted to be a little girl staring out her window at the magic in the skies. Kumbukani wanted it like nothing she had ever wanted before, but they refused to move.
The dirt underneath her felt gritty now, not soft as she fell back down onto it. Her eyes were caught by her paws, and the blood that that decorated them. But when she looked at them, she did not see the actions she had taken, but her reasons for them. She saw the pain she had suffered and the hurt she had gone through.
In that moment, she looked at herself and didn't see the helpless little girl so many had told her she must be. She didn't see a hopeless dreamer, or someone who had hurt without cause. No, she saw none of these things. Instead, she saw herself. She saw someone forced to grow up too soon, someone who had been hurt and who had harmed in return. Kumbukani saw a person in herself.
The moment passed quickly, but the effects of it lingered with her, and when she turned her golden eyes to the skies once more, the stars had begun their dance again.
