Polaroid's breath condensed and rose into the air, catching his attention. His eyes flit from over things quicker than a bird, his breath sharp in the stiff chill. His older brother had told him the dead that drifted through the Dead Forest would steal his spirit if he took a breath near them. The only way home to the barn was straight through the densely forested area. Sucking in his breath, Polaroid took off at a sprint through the trees, his eyes playing tricks on him. Spooked, he tucked in his rump and shut his eyes, running blindly towards home.
Now, as a full grown horse, Polaroid still shivers and casts a wary eye at the trees at night.

superstition: First of all, Amethyst is always tense when one of the two black barn cats - Rome and Deviant - crosses her path. She goes frantic, neighing and kicking her hooves up, which confuses riders nearby, and spooks the closest of horses. Ames cannot be swayed, although she usually wears a fly mask, which helps. Lucky horseshoes are one of Amethyst's stronger beliefs. Her horseshoes are a very sturdy iron, always polished, with small amethyst gems encrusted in the sides. Superstition declares that horseshoes alone are good luck, as is wearing your birthstone - which for Ames is Amethyst - so she considers this double-lucky. Amethyst refuses to graze in a paddock, unless it contains four leafed clovers. Riders sprinkle the lucky weeds all over her stall, helping her to feel calmer. She enjoys these treats more than anything else. Her last fear, is one that occurred only once. Her rider walked into her stall, carrying a small mirror in their pocket. When Amethyst started nosing near it for treats, the mirror fell, smashing, and spooking Amethyst thoroughly. It has been six years since the accident, so Amethyst still believes herself prone to bad luck. Ames refuses to go near the trail that passes through a graveyard, because as superstrition says, when passing through a graveyard you must close your mouth and pinch your nose, so evil spirits don't enter your body. Last time she attempted that, she collapsed. And don't even get me started on Friday the thirteenth.

It may seem silly, other horses may make fun of him for it, and he might look ridiculous attempting to avoid this- but Houdini is a very firm believer that if he steps on a crack, he'll truly break his mother's back. Growing up, he was very attached to his mum, and was made fun of because of it. He'd often leap out of tall fenced pastures to find her again, earning the nickname "Houdini." The other weanlings started telling him tales of the "step on a crack, you'll break your mum's back" superstition, and he always believed it. Now all grown up, he's definitely still a momma's boy, even standing at a massive height with tons of powerful muscles. Sometimes you'll even catch him in his meadow, leaping up and down in a intricate pattern, all to make sure his momma will be alright.
