horse name:

Show name: Breaking ground
Barn name: Bree

gender: Mare

personality: Bree is a very tolerant horse, and is a great beginners horse. However, she is often used by advanced riders because of her great jumping ability and canter. Bree's gaits are all very smooth, making it a pleasure to ride her. Bree was found in the desert as a yearling, her mother dead beside her. She was rescued, and is now 7 years old.

background story:

The sand blew in our eyes as our Jeep plowed through the dunes. The hot, summer air caused mirages to ripple the ground. We've already seen several carcasses picked clean by vultures. It was not a surprise when we found another. A small brown bump and a larger brown bump lay in the middle of the desert. The driver pulled up beside the bodies, and we piled out of the car. The bumps were two horses, a mare and her foal. I checked the mare. She was dead. Probably suffered from heat exhaustion, and died as a result. The foal next to her lied motionless in the sand. It was a girl. I placed my hand on the filly's neck. Nothing. I tried other places, desperately searching for signs of life. A soft thumping met my probing fingers. My eyes grow wide.

"This one's alive."

horse name: Tough as Diamonds "Tough"
gender: Stallion
personality: Tough is just like his name: powerful and strong. Stoic and timid, this boy doesn't really like company unless he trusts you a great deal. But, Tough wasn't always the way he is; there's reason for his attitude.
background story:
Tough raced alongside his mother, bucking playfully. His mother smiled at the youngster's antics before she continued walking. "Come along, Tough. Let's not dilly-dally." she said softly, sensing something was suddenly very wrong. Before she could take another step, there was an awful, earsplitting BANG! The foal snorted and bucked harder, possessed by a sudden wave of fear. His mother suddenly let out a piercing cry of agony, a wail of horror that froze Tough to the spot. "Tough, don't stand there! GO!" his mother cried, swaying from the pain. "GO!" The foal looked, horrified, one last time.
"But Mama, I don't wanna go!" the foal wailed.
"Just go!"
The foal sadly, yet obediently, loped away.
He wandered for many days before he found the humans. There was a kind one among them, one much like himself; quiet, timid, and subdued. He stayed with them until he grew strong again. He left one night, and never saw the humans again.

horse name: Independent Motion "Indie"

gender: gelding

personality: Indie is a quiet horse. He's not one much for crowds, and isn't fond of young children either. He's a bit timid and spooky. He's a fantastic jumper at anything less than 3', although he hates to show. He absolutely HATES anything wet. Mud, rain, baths, puddles, etc. This makes his prospects as a trail horse a bit slim. Indie is really a one person horse. Once you have his trust, he will follow you around like a puppy dog.

background story:
The sun blazed down on the small group of stallions. There were six of them in the small band. The dun leader. The strawberry roan second in command. There were the two chestnut troublemakers, and the black daredevil. And then there was Star. They couldn't quite place his coloring, as it was somewhere in between a dun and buckskin, yet without black points. So they called him Star after his markings. As the group wandered over the desert, Star pricked up his ears.
"Leader?"
Leader sighed and swished his tail.
"No, that cactus back there is not a wolf. No two-leggers are following us. There are no rival stallions within a half-mile."
Star's head drooped. "But.... I know I smelled something!"
Leader pinned his ears. "Leave it be."
Roan stepped up. "Leader. We should send out a scout. Star has.... occasionally, been right."
Leader stamped a hoof, but conceded the point. "Less Trouble!" he called out.
The large chestnut stallion cantered up. "What's up, Leader?"
"Scout around. Star here thinks he smelled something."
"You got it boss!" Less Trouble galloped away.
"Happy now?" Leader inquired of Star, who swished his tail quietly.
"Mostly. Thank you, Leader."
The band walked on. Nearly fifteen minutes later Less Trouble had still not appeared. Leader and Roan were getting worried. Star was beside himself with anxiety. Leader finally made a decision. He was worried about Less Trouble, and thought that he might have picked a fight, then got beaten up.
"Roan." Roan looked up and trotted closer to Leader. "Yes?"
" I'm going to look for Less Trouble. I'll be back shortly. Keep the band here, and keep them safe." Roan nodded his head, and Leader cantered off in the general direction Less Trouble had gone. Only about three minutes had gone by when Leader galloped back to the stationary herd.
"Run!" he screamed. "Run! Evil two-leggers! They've got Less Trouble! They're coming for us!"
The herd frantically galloped away. Black was in the lead, with tiny Trouble Catcher right behind him. Roan was only a few paces behind Trouble Catcher. Leader quickly passed Star, who was not very fast.
"Wait! Slow down!" Star cried out. The rest of the herd didn't even look back. They were driven by instinct and the will to survive. The evil two-leggers were catching up to Star. They rode on the back of horse slaves. The fastest of the horse slaves pulled alongside Star. She was a beautiful dapple gray that Star would have tried to flirt with under different circumstances. Star felt the rope settle around his neck and gave an agonized whinny. He was caught. The next few days went by in a blur. Trailers. Ropes. Corals. Raised voices. He saw Less Trouble once, then a two-legger family came, and took him. He spent his days spooking at scary two-legger things and sulking in his pen. One day a female two-legger came to him.
"Hey buddy." She said. Of course Star didn't understand the words, but they sounded friendly enough.
"You've had a hard time," She said quietly. "It's time to find your new home."

This was probably way too long, but it was fun to write. Fun enough that maybe I'll write more about Leader and his band some other time. Hope you enjoyed!
