She fell in love with these little birds at a lake where she grew up. A wide, gentle river emptied into a lake before continuing on the other side, and it was at this lake's shore where she noticed these little blue-green birds for the first time. She knew that many varieties of feathered life lived here, and was observing how the once cotton-ball-like ducklings were shedding their fluff when a small, iridescent figure darted out from the trees and toward what looked like the scene of the world's largest pillow fight (think...feathers EVERYWHERE!) and swooped to pick up a feather off of the surface of the lake. It didn't even touch the water. It skimmed a hairsbreadth above the lake, feather in its beak, and then as quickly as it swooped down, it shot skyward. It twirled and twisted in the air, releasing the feather high above the water's surface. the feather hung there for a moment before beginning its lazy spiral back down, and the bird performed its own loop before snatching the feather right out of the air. It did this several times before being joined by two more little birds, each one diving, capturing, soaring, and releasing. Little blue-green birds were now everywhere, chasing feathers, catching bugs, and flying in gravity-defying patterns, all of them singing happy songs. Doing research, she found ways to attract them with feed, string, feathers, and nesting boxes, and has looked forward to seeing them every summer since.
