The soft flickering of the light bulb illuminated a small corner of a work desk, where a fatigued father typed away at his typewriter the first words of a fairytale, with his little daughter on his back with her arms wrapped around his neck as she peered at the paper from behind him.

Edith's Forest

Edith was a little girl who lived in the forest. --

"But Daddy," her little voice whispered, half asleep, "that's not interesting."

"Well, what would you suggest?" he asked, crumpling the failed first draft of the story into a ball.

"I was thinking she could be from the city! Just like us. And she wants to go to the forest, and her parents say yes. So she leaves," the girl whispered excitedly, squirming around behind him.

"Are you trying to say something, little missus?" the father teased, swinging her around and seating her on his lap. "You wanna leave our family?" he asked, pouting.

"No...!" the girl replied, pouting likewise. "I just want to go to a forest too."

Edith's Forest

Edith lived in a city, filled with lots of people moving in and out. But in her heart, she had always wanted to go to the forest, and see what it was like there.

One day, she asked her parents if she could move to the forest. They told her yes, and helped her pack all of her things for her big adventure in the forest. With that, she marched her way to the forest, away from all the bustling people and into the welcoming arms of the forest trees.

"Lottie dear," the father started, stopping his typing to look down at her, "what kinds of animals should Edith see in the forest?"

"Well," Lottie murmured, her eyelids drooping as she spread her arms out, envisioning the forest scenery in front of her, "we could have a... a fox! Remember, Daddy, where there's the fox that tries to steal the cheese from the raven?"

The father chuckled, cradling her with one arm. "Of course we can have a fox. Anything else, dear?"

"A... a big, fluffy bear, and I think a cute duck... would do nicely... And a deer! A deer," she trailed off, rubbing her eyes drowsily. "No frogs, though," she added with a yawn, "they're slimy and weird."

"Alright, honey," the father laughed, ruffling his daughter's hair as he got back to typing.

Edith happened to stumble upon a bear, a deer, a fox, and a duck in the forest, bickering and fighting. Edith was shocked and ran into the group. "What's going on?" she asked the animals.

"We're trying to figure out how we can all live in this one forest!" the duck quacked. "We can't possibly all live in this forest!"

"That's right," the bear nodded, "the forest is too small for everyone to live here."

"So, we're trying to decide who can stay," the fox replied.

"And who has to leave," the deer sighed.

"Maybe I can help," Edith pipped. "Maybe if we..."

"No, no," the bear sighed as he patted her back. "You're from the city. We can smell it. How can you help us with our problem?" The other animals nodded in agreement. Edith sighed and sat on a rock. "Alright," she said, "I'll have to wait until you guys figure it out."

The ever so soft snoring of little Lottie broke the father's concentration. The little tyke had fallen asleep, the precious angel. With a tired smile on his face, he scooped up his daughter in his soot laden arms and gently placed her on the rickety couch, brushing away the few strands of hair in front of her eyes.

After watching her little chest rise and fall as she slipped into a dreamy wonderland, his eyes drifted toward a clock on the wall. About midnight. In four hours, his little treasure would have to wake up for another day at the factory. He sighed, and turned back to his typewriter.

Lottie, I will not be able to change the world in a night.

But I will try my best to start the movement that will end this injustice once and for all.

This is dedicated to you, Charlotte.

I love you, my daughter of mine.

The bear declared, "I say we drive all the small animals out! We bears are the biggest, and so we need the biggest amount of forest we can get."

"No, no, no," the deer quavered, "I believe the bigger animals need to leave. We deer need to eat plants, and we can only get it in this forest. The bears can find their meat elsewhere."

"And let the fox get trampled by the bear? We cannot have that!" the fox exclaimed. "We fox will be squashed by the bear if we are driven out. We fox need places to run around in, and we can only get that in the forest."

"Are we forgetting the ducks?" the duck asked. "We ducks need a lake, and only this part of the forest has a lake. Clearly, everyone else can go elsewhere!"

"Guys, I can help!" Edith chirped, waving her hand. "I have a good idea where --"

"You cannot help us!" the animals exclaimed.

"You are too weak," the bear said.

"You aren't from the forest," the deer said.

"You don't know enough about the forest to make a good plan," the fox said.

"And you are just a little girl," the duck said.

Edith was angry. "I can make a better plan than all of you combined!" she fumed. "You're just scared that I'll make a better plan than yours and make you look dumb! Just because you think I'm weak because I'm a girl doesn't mean my ideas can't be good also. Besides," she said with a sniff, "you didn't even listen to my plan yet."

The bear, the deer, the fox, and the duck looked at each other and turned to Edith.

"We're sorry we didn't listen to you before," the bear apologized. "We shouldn't have judged you for what you looked like and where you were from. So if we listen to your plan and work together, we should be able to settle this issue once and for all."

Edith nodded. "So, since the bears are the largest, they get to have this cave that's in the forest. But they shouldn't live near the grassy area, where the deer can live. The fox can have the open pasture here, so they can run, and the ducks can have the lake. Everyone can visit, and have fun! As long as we don't try to live on each other's space, we should be okay!"

The bear, the deer, the fox, and the duck all nodded together in agreement. "We like this idea!" they said.

"Thank you, Edith," they said as they left for their area.

Edith sat down on the rock as she watched them leave.

"The forest is peaceful," she said, smiling as she closed her eyes.

Charlotte was born on June 23rd, 1845. At the tender age of six, Charlotte started working in a textile factory, from 4 am to 3 pm. Child labor laws were not enforced strongly in a growing, industrial United States. At the age of eight, on November 3rd, 1853, Charlotte's life was lost to a machine malfunction during her shift.

Her father, Richard Larsen, published the short story in 1856. Its initial reception was poor, as many looked down upon its radical idea that women were equal to men, with the symbolism of Edith as women and the animals as society. It was not well received until the late 1900s, when people started to praise it for its commentary for its time period.

As various storytellers have retold the story, its message warped until it became a story about cooperation, not about what it was originally intended to point out. The short story turned into a fairytale about cooperation, as publishers put out picture books for children to enjoy.

On March 23rd, 2009, Charlotte was born, but this time, in a different body, to a king and queen of a distant kingdom.

TL;DR - First encounter between Lottie and Grimsly. The two meet each other at the lake Grimsly lives in and the two read Edith's Forest and draw frogs in the picture book as they become friends.
