- she got them when she was little. back then they were bursting with bright colors: red, orange, yellow, green, and indigo. shiny and smooth to the touch. the five beads were a going away present from her parents. "only two weeks," they said whenever she questioned them. "we'll be back before you know it!" whenever they said those words she always felt reassured.
until the two weeks were up...and they still weren't home. maybe the trip is just taking longer then they thought, she told herself. but she knew she was just lying to herself. and it was only a matter of time before the horrible truth struck her. so when her grandparents came over one day she was already prepared to hear those four, life changing words: "they're never coming back."
the next couple of days, months, years were full of distress. she kept a smile on her face, a happy glint in her eyes; she held all of the pain inside. but whenever she was alone, the tears would always stream down her face. the anger would arise. why had such a thing had to happen? to her? to her parents? it just didn't seem....fair. but life has never been fair.
so when she grew older, she changed the colors of those beads. crimson, for the anger. burgundy, for the pain. turquoise, for the sadness. dark amber, a small reminder of the happiness she felt before that day. and black, for the never ending darkness.
