Name:Fritz. Named after Fritz Lang, the man who wrote/directed Metropolis.
Gender:Male.
Personality:Outspoken in his criticisms, stubborn, but clever. His attitude and reluctance to back down from challenges often get him into trouble, but he has a way with words that often helps him to escape the worst situations relatively unscathed. He knows he's different, and he's proud of it. This doesn't stop him from trying to find others like him, creatures of steam and metal rather than flesh and bone. Despite his pride and confidence, perhaps some part of him is lonely.
He rarely leaves his home in the factory; he has work to do. Though when he does end up meeting another Zeki, he is quite cordial, so long as they are polite. His greatest fear is that he will one day be deprived of his senses and left blind, deaf, and mute as he was in his first months of life.
Story:When Fritz's systems first hummed to life, he was alone. The world was dark, and quiet, and peaceful. There was no strife, there was no discontent. His world was one of peace, so different from the land outside the dark walls.
Life was good.
Life was empty.
Life was boring.
It was not long before he grew dissatisfied with this, as all living things must, and his mind began to wander. Surely there was more to life. But let's change the subject; something important was happening in the lives of those quiet, tiny creatures who lived in the walls. While Fritz spent his time lying on the ground and pondering over the nature of his existence, the rats had been busy. Fall was ending, and winter would be fast on its heels. They needed to gather food, and quickly. One of these rats, in its haste, dropped a nut on the floor.
In that moment, Fritz knew sound for the first time. The small "clack" of the nut hitting the factory's concrete floor was so quiet as to be insignificant to anyone else. But to Fritz, it was the first proof that life might've been more. After that infinitesimal noise, the silence was deafening. He lied there for a long time, debating with himself the significance of this development. Where had it come from? What was it? Questions ate at Fritz's mind, demanding answers that he did not have.
And so, he began the first of his experiments.
With a screech of rusted metal, Fritz opened his mouth and issued forth a burst of steam that hissed as it hit the air. If that could move, what else could? He stretched legs that had never before seen use, ignoring the creaking and whirring of the gears that made up his joints. Limbs shaking and steam billowing forth from his maw, he stood for the first time. The lights in his eye sockets flickered once, twice, before finally staying on.
He was greeted by the sight of a dusty room, filled with crates upon crates. The ground was concrete, peppered with cracks and rat droppings. He found that if he tapped his paws upon the ground, it made noise, similar and yet different from the first sound he had heard. Amber light filtered in through the grimy windows that made up the ceiling, casting a dim orange glow over the cobwebs littering the room. In the corner of the room, he spotted movement, something small and quick. He made a note to find this small-quick-thing later, in order to learn what it was and how it worked. For the moment, he was busy drinking in the sight of his world.
Fritz knew, without a doubt, that it was beautiful.
