I think it goes with the fact that, when something happens, he doesn't want to think about it and focuses on something, anything, else. Asher's reliever is cleaning. He becomes tuned in the every thing that is out of place, dusty, sticky, dirty, whatever. He attempts to wipe away his problems. It's almost like a nervous tick, I suppose.
