Fae
The previous owner of Fae's lava lamp loved it very much. Her name is engraved on the bottom of the lamp: Lilina.
Lilina was born with a weakened immune system, like most babies are, but it never grew stronger. She was forced to live her life inside, never making any friends. She couldn't even have a pet because of the pet hair and dander that threatened her. Her parents weren't particularly wealthy, but as a family, they managed. They tried very hard to provide a full life for Lilina, sacrificing the company of their own friends to make Lilina's life flourish.
Then, one day, Lilina's father received a letter in the mail. It was from the Council of Bishops of their fair country: they had declared war with a neighboring land. Lilina's father was being drafted.
The day before he was to depart, he decided to take Lilina outside to the market. He had always wanted to take her out into the real world, and he feared that if he left without doing it, he never would be able to.
They browsed over all sorts of colorful stalls, each more interesting than the next. However, the only item that truly caught Lilina's eye was the lava lamp. The owner of the stall it was being sold at was a mage. He had enchanted the lamp so that the inner contents constantly moved about. Lilina begged her father to buy it for her. It cost almost all that they had, but he couldn't say no to his darling daughter.
They went home that night and placed it on the table next to Lilina's bed. Her father said to her as he tucked her in, "As long as this lamp glows and moves, I will be dreaming of coming home to you." He left that night for the war, a single tear in his eye.
Lilina patiently waited many long months after her father's departure. The letters came and went, but soon, the coming ones began to slow. Eventually, they stopped. They still went at a steady rate, but they were never met with a returning letter.
Lilina's health began to deteriorate. Her mother did all that she could, but she could not stop the plague of a broken heart and depression.
One night, Lilina slipped away. The lava lamp stopped flowing and dimmed slightly after her last breath escaped her. Her father was right: as long the lava lamp glowed and moved, he would dream of coming home. The lamp had finally stopped. He had come home to Lilina.
(Man, sorry it's so sad. I hadn't really meant for it to turn into that ouo If you'd like me to add how Fae came upon the lamp, I can add that)
