Kia's name: Quetzal. It's the name of a bird that lives in South America, a brilliant bird with green feathers. Certain types of these birds are becoming rare, but I did not choose it just because of this; I chose it because it's both a beautiful name, and a representation to me that all is not lost. Yes, some species have gone extinct, and pollution is a large problem, but it's getting better every year. The state of the world today is far better than it was ten, twenty, thirty years ago!

We may have bigger and more deadly weapons, but we have no need to use them - we're safe from war at the moment. We may have lost many species to Charles Darwin's laws, but we still have the beautiful birds of the south; and they've survived this long - it'll be a huge amount of time before even our species could wipe out the entire collection of exotic feathered things that live in warm places!

Quetzals are rare, but not gone yet. And this Kia, whether I win or not, never will be rare, nor gone, from my mind. Because she is Quetzal - a dapple of beauty in a struggling world. A green leaf fallen into a mucky puddle. A bird taking flight in my heart.
