EGF's name: Norfolk
gender: Male
element: Darkness
personality: Quiet, to the point where others believe he is reclusive, though he really isn't. At least, not usually. His facial expression does not change often nor to much of a degree. He usually remains blank-faced, like a stone; he can certainly have emotions inside, but they are usually not particularly strong emotions. While not inherently negative or "bad," he is generally very neutral and even indifferent, which causes others to see him as arrogant or that he believes he is somehow superior or "too good" for them, which in turn results in him having somewhat of a bad reputation, though he hasn't actually done anything to deserve it. Others tend to have a hard time trusting him, since he emotes so little in public and maintains such a stoic, stone-faced visage. He is very impartial, fair, and logical, often making him the perfect candidate for resolving conflicts and disputes. He is also rather clueless about standard social interaction and social norms; he follows his own social standards (very logical ones) and finds interacting with others (who are "normal" and not like him) difficult and tiring. But he tries. *shrug*
short story (3 paragraphs): Okay, I have multiple characters, so for reference's sake here they all are:
Aashita, female, flaming foxVega, female, Earth EGFTungsten, male, Metal EGFVánek, male, Air EGFNeytiri, female, Fire EGF Norfolk's head swung to the left, then to the right, then back to the left; he hoped the matter was resolved soon, or he would surely develop a crick in his neck. The argument had been going on for what felt like hours, his fellow foxes unable to come to a decision; he had eventually stopped listening altogether when it became clear that his input was no longer necessary. Vánek, to his left, made a quiet observation, most likely in his favor; the air elemental liked most everyone and was one of the very few who had ever been able to see beyond Norfolk's stony mask. To his right, Neytiri answered in a heated bark. Tungsten lurked somewhere in the shadows in front of him, bored and most likely annoyed to no end with the discussion-turned-argument. Norfolk could relate; the entire matter seemed pointless to him, a no-brainer, and certainly not important enough to make such a big deal over. Vega hovered anxiously just behind the metal elemental, fanning her wings slightly in mild distress. Aashita, the most annoying one of the bunch, who was not even an elemental fox and should not even
be here, paced restlessly between Vánek and the stubborn Tungsten.
The whole matter was pointless. Norfolk was about to give up and just leave when the metal fox apparently lost all patience and beat him to it. "There's no reason for us to have to
discuss this. It's ridiculous! I'm going for a snack. If you actually get anywhere with this,
don't come find me." Giving a final snarl, he stomped out of the clearing to find a bite to eat, being completely ignored by all but Vega. The darkness elemental decided that sounded better than sitting here, waiting on a decision that would seemingly never come, and made to follow Tungsten.
But his movement was enough to make all eyes snap suddenly and frighteningly onto just him. "Where do you think
you're going?" Neytiri asked lowly.
Norfolk's answer was simple, logical, as always. "If I need not participate in this conversation, then I will also find some lunch." And as always, logic won out against the fire elemental; she seemed to nearly sputter for a moment, but decided that he was right and waved him off with the flick of an ear, immediately turning back to her opponents, Vánek and Aashita, in the argument. Vánek was unperturbed and gave him a parting smile, while Aashita was struggling to hold in her amusement at Neytiri's previous indignant expression. Vega wouldn't hardly look at him, so the darkness elemental just turned and made to catch up with Tungsten. The metal fox, at least, seemed to contain some sense.
Norfolk found him at the side of a small trail, munching on bitter red and sweet black berries, and joined him in the feast. Tungsten just glanced at him, muttering between bites, "You get tired of them, too, eh? Well, I don't see the problem here." He swallowed noisily. "You're here, and that's that. No need for silly
rituals or whatever." The dark fox vehemently agreed, but merely stared at the other, chewing his own berries slowly. A pause followed, then, "So what's your power?" Tungsten squared himself and reached to tap his gem with a claw; it made a slight ringing sound, as of metal striking metal. "I control all proper metals, whether pure or ore, but I can't handle compounds like steel. Iron is the best for me. What can you do?"
Norfolk took a moment to compile his answer (and finish chewing) before he spoke: "I can see in the dark, sense things when others are blind and lost." A short speech, but such was his way. And it was never a good idea to reveal
all of one's hand. They stared at each other a moment, both coming to realize at the same moment that the other had finished eating and they were ready to leave.
Tungsten shook himself and led the way back up the track. "We should get back..."
As they arrived at the clearing once more, the argument continued. Vánek made his soft appeal, Neytiri retorted stubbornly, Vega wavered in the background and spoke not a word, and Aashita still paced and made an overall nuisance of herself. It angered the metal fox. He resolved to end this ridiculousness, raising his voice to be sure he was heard. "He stays."
All eyes were on him in an instant.
"He's decent. He stays." Neytiri opened her mouth to object. "Majority, Neytiri."
Tungsten was right, they could not make important decisions without approval of the group; now both Tungsten and Vánek were for Norfolk's joining, and Vega stood behind the metal fox every time. Only the Neytiri had some reason for the darkness elemental's rejection. Aashita's opinion did not count, as she was not an elemental; she was too much of a free spirit, a drifter, for it to matter.
The fire elemental had no choice but to relent. "... Fine... But I still think there should be an initiation ritual..." She looked a little put out at being denied her fun, but moved to hug her cousin, nonetheless. "Welcome to the club, Norfolk. Well, more of a family, really. You're gonna like staying with us..."
Yes, the entire matter merely debated whether there should be an initiation for his joining their small group. They lived together, ate together, made memories together, and they were all glad to have one more. This trivial subject broke them apart a little, but they always came back together, like the family they were. It still sort of confused Norfolk, but some part of him was happy to have friends. The hug was weird, though; he made a face of slight bewilderment and dismay as his new friends smiled and moved in for the kill, the cluster nearly falling over as Aashita launched herself into the mess. Friends were nice, but he could do with less hugs...
