Story:
The wet season was upon the herds of Oxiries that called the wide open scrubby Savannah their home, and every day the heavens seemed to open up and weep, saturating the earth below to make it through another dry season to come. Their horns scraped the sky as they moved forward with rocking gaits, before halting to graze at the tall grasses and brush. But one Oxirie was missing from the herd under Liroy's control. The tall dust-colored male snorted quietly, raising his head hurriedly, glancing about in surprise. Where was his striking doe, the striped Tilanti? He blew quietly, stepping away from the other does, bucks, and young, trekking through the scrub and tall foliage.
His ears were perked forward, tail swishing as he moved along, drinking in the scent of his treasured doe. She was heavy with kid, and she should not be left alone for too long- what if she grew too tired and tried to doze off, and was attacked in her rest? A few cloven hoofprints led his way as he pushed his way through the grasses, forcing his way through the scrub trees. His dust-colored face peered about, his amber eyes aglow. A bit of shadow was visible through the trees, and he hurriedly moved after the glimpse of hide.
The doe was on her side, breathing heavily as she rested after her long ordeal, the ground around her soft from the near-constant rainfall. The earlier drizzles had kept her from overheating during her long labor, and made her coat shimmer like silk. The sand-colored buck approached slowly, touching his nose gently to her cheek as he blew out a sweet grass-scented breath. Her sides were not as round as before- but where was the calf?
Tilanti groaned softly, shutting her emerald eyes as she lifted her nose to touch her muzzle to her mate's. She rocked up from her side, her legs now underneath her. She rocked her head to and fro, staring around for their shared offspring. She let out a worried little snort, ears pricking forward upon no sight of any calf. She hurriedly tried to get up to her hooves, and Liroy hurriedly set his muzzle against her neck, gently guiding her back down.
The buck turned, looking back and forth- she had been gone for a few hours, but surely the calf couldn't have gone far. And Tilanti would have sensed a predator, surely.... Liroy moved off into the brush, poking around, suddenly finding his muzzle touching striped hide. The little haunches of the calf trembled, as she turned her little dished face around to blink her large green eyes, much like her mother. Liroy sighed with relief- it seemed that the little calf hadn't gone far once getting the hang of her legs. He gently nosed his new little doe back towards mommy, quietly blowing on her back. He'd never seen any of the calves in his herd stand up that fast and trek off on their own. Perhaps he'd have to keep a closer eye on her. She might wander off again- and her didn't want anything to happen to his new little joy.
(XD I meant for this to be more natural, so no talking! I love this little lady....she's gorgeous!)
