The story of how we met:

why would I like to have her ☪

I've been stalking Rune Dragons for some time, waiting for "the right one," as I didn't want to apply for a Rune Dragon I was only half attracted to. When I checked on the thread to see what was up for adoption tonight I fell head over heels for this little girl. Her pose was what got me initially, I love how she's alert and ready for anything. The color was a secondary attraction. It emphasizes her stance, her readiness. Her eyes are so intense, and her glowing markings simply encourage the alertness factor. I fell in love with her because of these reasons, so I've decided to pursue her.

where would I keep her ☪

She would certainly go in my character thread (which is currently indisposed since I don't have many characters but she would change the state of my thread). I change my signature quite often, though I'm sure she would be a feature for at least some time and even if she would not always be a part of it I'm certain she would be every now and again.

Potentially, yes. I'm sure that would depend on whether I found a suitable mate for her.

Well, beyond the obvious brightness of her markings she is very bright. She learns things extremely quickly and with ease. Puzzles are nothing for this little beauty, she can figure them out in no time flat. She is especially good at problem solving and is likely to find a way around something that no one else has thought about yet. She always seems to be a few steps ahead of the rest.

Niamh is known for hiding away, showing signs of submission and avoiding confrontation at all costs. While most Nocturnes are generally social creatures Niamh is extremely nervous to make contact with other runes, even of her own species. She is even more timid with humans and will attempt to make herself invisible if she sees a hand coming towards her, huddling down as small as she can get and hiding beneath her wings.

Niamh is extremely doubtful in any social situation. She does not trust that she will not be hurt in some way and she does not trust that anyone is truly attempting to befriend her. She approaches all social situations with a reserved distrust. She suspects any kind act as a fallacy to hurt her and it takes a great amount of time to obtain her trust, and very little to shatter it.

Perhaps paranoid is a more apt description. Niamh gets extremely nervous about things even when it's extremely calm and quiet. Then it's too quiet and something is going to happen. If it's loud it's too loud and is scary. Someone might be watching her or following her or plotting against her. Niamh is always anxious that something is happen or might happen, even if it isn't specifically to her. There might be an earthquake or a flood, who knows!? She can be soothed by those she trusts, but even still she will always be waiting for something.

One might think that Niamh would be cold hearted given her other characteristics but she is truly just the opposite. While she may not believe the intentions of others are good she is a very sweet natured Rune. She will often try to help other Runes, but she does so quietly and attempts not to be noticed because she is always afraid she'll be rejected, despite her kindness.

Although Niamh is shy and skittish, she is extremely expressive of all her emotions. It's never really a question as to what she's feeling. She is extremely good at communicating not only her emotions, but also her thoughts as well. However she will shy away from other Runes or people if she doesn't know them, trying not to express anything.

Is it shiny? Does it glow? Does it glitter? Then she either wants it or has already taken it. Niamh loves all things shiny, glittering, and/or glowing. She seems particularly fond of things which colors are golds and/or yellows. She has an entire treasury in her nest filled with fools' gold, gold coins, gold jewelry, shiny yellow and golden stones, beads, and other such things. She's very protective over these treasures, and will only let you see it if she trusts you. Try to steal any of her precious items and she will lose any trust she may have for you instantly.

She loves to secretly drop gifts off at other Rune's dens or at the doors of people if she likes them. She may choose something from her own private collection or she may go out and hunt for the perfect gift. She is always very discreet about doing such things and will never admit that she has done it, but she will sit in the sidelines and watch how her gift is appreciated.

Niamh loves to be groomed, absolutely ADORES it. If she has even a speck of dirt on her she requires a bath right then and there. She loves to hop around in shallow streams and feel the cool water on her little body. Being brushed is something that she will love you for a great deal. While it takes time to earn her trust to do so, once you do you're likely to be considered a friend in her book. She loves to smell sweet, and will often root around in perfume bottles of her owner and demand that she have a little sprayed onto her.

If you think you've misplaced a book around Niamh it's far more likely that she has it instead. She learned the written language with ease and adores to read books, absorbing all the knowledge and adventure they may have. She is fond of all types of books, but most especially she loves picture books. Besides just books Niamh loves to watch ballet. Her favorite ballet is Swan Lake, and she always coos happily while watching it.

Niamh doesn't remember much from her family. It seems like everything she ever knew about them was nothing more than a dream... In that dream she was happy. She had her parents and her world was complete. At that time she was a beautiful blossoming flower of confidence and trust. Nothing could bring her down!

Then the storm came... The little Rune's dream turned into a vicious nightmare; Niamh was all alone.

She was very young to be on her own, but she made it. She fought to keep the den which she was born from scavenger Runes and other creatures. She fought for her life, seen as easy prey by predators since she was so small and all alone. Niamh changed quickly, adapting to what the cruel world had to offer her. She spent years alone, trusting no one and keeping herself as small and quiet as possible.

As for me? Well I'm not really important. Just another soul floating around this strange world. I'd never owned a Rune dragon before, though I'd known many whom did. They were always so beautiful and majestic. I longed deeply for one of my own. Oh, did I long.

It was a dreary night when I found her. A storm was dwindling down; thunder was still clapping in the distance and the lightning was still piercing through the dark sky. A light drizzle was still coming down from the angry clouds, only a small fraction of what had been pouring down earlier. I was out enjoying the after effects of the storm's wrath in the woods; something I did often. It helped me think.

I don't know how long I'd been wandering, not paying any attention to where I was going but just letting myself go wherever my feet took me. I hadn't realized how deeply into the woods I had gotten until I paused for a moment, realizing I didn't recognize this area. I had never been quite this far in. Not that I was terribly concerned, I could always find my way out of these woods without a problem.

That's when I saw it. Out of my peripheral vision a strange, pulsating glow thrummed a soft teal-ish green. It was so dim that I barely noticed it. It just barely peaked out from under a pile of leaves and brush. I knelt down by it, watching it fade in and out so slowly it was almost like a lighthouse light. I brushed away the rubble gently, revealing a small, dark shape underneath. Its one wing was covering its head, but it was in a very awkward position. I reached to touch it when two glowing eyes that matched the pulsating glow snapped open and stared at me with a great intensity. Frozen, we both stared at each other for a long moment, the pulsing colors quickening, yet still dim.

Its heartbeat. I realized with a sudden dread. The pulsing color was too dim in contrast to its eyes. This creature was hurt, possibly dying. I knew I needed to help it. I reached my hand toward the little creature, which was no bigger than a Boreal owl. It opened its beak and mad a strange hissing sound at me, its eyes narrowing. A warning, I knew. This creature didn't trust me. I couldn't blame it, it had no idea who I was. Perhaps no idea what I was. But I knew I had to help it, whether it liked it or not.

I took off the jacket I was wearing, inching towards the little creature slowly, making soft reassuring sounds at it. I could tell it was weak and fading; the pulsing continued to dim and it was having a difficult time keeping its eyes open. I knew I had to act faster than I was. I scooped up the creature, attempting to bundle it in my jacket as best as I could. It managed a retaliation with its razor sharp claws across the top of my right hand, yet I couldn't just leave it.

I held the bundle close to my body as I ran as quickly as my legs could carry me. As I ran the creature became more and more docile, drifting out of consciousness. After what seemed like years I burst out from the woods, into the town where I lived. I knew exactly who to take it to.

Arriving on their doorstep I pounded as loudly as I could. It was late, I knew, but I didn't care. I shouted for them to open their door and that I needed their help. A man looking rather tired open the door, scrutinizing me. "Beag, is that you? What are you doing here at such a late hour?" he asked, his voice thick and scratchy. I could tell he'd been in bed.

"I- I'm sorry! But, I need help." I held out the creature, revealing its limp body. The thrumming was barely a whisper now. The man's eyes widened, recognizing the little winged beast as a Rune Dragon. He ushered me in, taking the creature from me and dashing into his lab. He was a caretaker for all creatures ill or hurt. The town vet, if you would. I sat down on a chair, dreading what could, and possibly would happen.

Hours passed, and I barely moved. Sleep was never going to happen at this rate, though I could feel the exhaustion creeping up on me. Finally the man walked out, rubbing his hands with a towel. I jumped up at the sight of him, my entire body tense as I attempted to read his facial expression. "Well, she's going to be alright. It looks like she was attacked during the storm, possibly by another Rune for territory or food. Who knows. All I can tell you for certain is that she needs rest, and so do you. Do you need me to look at your hand?"

I looked at my hands, the memory of her scratching me a faint one. "Oh... No, it's okay," I said to him, thinking it was. He pursed his lips and motioned for me to sit down, which I did. He took my hand in his and turned it different angles. "You need stitches. It'll only hurt a bit, and I can do it for you now. You just sit still and try not to pass out." He stitched up my hand and set me up on his couch to sleep, despite my complaints. Exhaustion set in quickly once I'd laid down and I drifted into dreamless sleep.

The next morning I awoke to the smell of warm cider and eggs, but my only thought was on the little glowing Rune. "How is she? Is she going to be okay? What are you going to do with her?" I asked frantically as he smiled kindly at me, knowing something that I clearly did not. He set down a cup of the cider and a small plate of scrambled eggs on the side of the table where I stood, taking a seat on the opposite side with his own breakfast.

"Sit," he said to me, motioning at the plate. I begrudgingly sat down and took a small bite of the eggs to nibble on. "The Rune is fine, from what I can tell. She will only let me touch her for short periods of time, and even then she dislikes it. Which brings me to my point. Do you know about the bond of Runes and people?" I nodded uncertainly, understanding the basics of it, but not fully understanding. He smiled at me, knowing I wasn't completely sure. "Well, when a Rune and a human bond there is always a reason for it. No one knows what that reason may be or why, but there is. Once the bond is formed it is there forever, the Rune will never have the same bond with another person again. This Rune, Beag, has bonded to you."

I stared at him, puzzled. "How do you know? She scratched me. And hissed at me! There's no way we're bonded." Frustration and confusion hit me hard, not understanding the conflicting information. "Let's go see her, then," he said, standing up and walking away from the table. I followed suit, trailing behind him through his workspace and into the back where he kept the sick or injured creatures. There she was, ducking behind her wing, eyes barely peeking out at us. The thrumming color was much brighter now, and steady. A healthy heartbeat, I knew. I smiled at her as he opened the door to her space. She shrank back for a moment as I reached my wounded hand in slowly. We stared at each other for a long time, neither of us moving when she suddenly seemed to relax.

She walked up to my hand, slowly and uncertainly, and cautiously began nuzzling my stitches. She made soft cooing sounds at me, and I grinned at her, trying not to move and scare her off. I turned to look at the caretaker and he nodded, "I told you, there is a bond between you two. She is yours now, so you have to take care of her."

Looking back at the little creature I reached in my other hand to pick her up. She flinched at first, but softened as I put my hands on her gently and carefully. I scooped her into my arm, lightly petting her with one hand. And I knew that he was right. This little girl, despite her previous cursed life had blessed my life with an amazing light. My little Niamh.
