Humorist ~ A Tragic Figure
Steve Donoghue greatest of English jockeys, vouches for the truth of this story.
In the spring of 1920 there was a small, beautifully made chestnut colt among the two-year-olds in the stable for which he was riding. When he tried this colt, named Humorist, in his exercise gallops, he liked the colt for his intelligence and disposition as well as for his beautiful action. By the time the colt was ready to go to the post for his first race, everyone around the stable felt that here was a champion in the making.
When Donoghue and the trainer saw the colt in the paddock at saddling time, they hardly recognized him. Instead of the sleek, well-conditioned animal that had left the stables a few hours before, they saw a thin, miserable-looking colt with a rough coat. Humorist looked as if he had lost fifty pounds. A thorough examination gave no explanation of the cause of this sudden change. Donoghue, knowing that something was wrong, gave Humorist as easy as a race as possible, calling for speed only in the last few yards to win by a head.
Time after time the same thing happened. Suddenly for no apparent reason he would lose all his spirit and condition; sometimes he would weaken suddenly right at the finish line. People began to call the horse a quitter, but Donoghue never lost faith in him. He knew it was not any lack of courage that caused the sudden weakening at the finish, and Donoghue was very unhappy that he could not find the cause.
On the day of the Derby, greatest of English races, Donoghue was overjoyed to find his favorite in the paddock looking sleek, fit, and spirited. On the way to the post he pranced and almost seemed to say, "This is my day."
Humorist won in the greatest race of his career! In that heartbreaking uphill stretch to the finish he stilled the critics who called him a coward. But it was to be his last race. A few weeks later he was found dead in his stall. A postmortem was held to try to discover the cause and it was found that he had only one lung!
Many of the best and soundest horses have found the mile and a half of the Derby too much for them; how Humorist, with only one lung to feed that dauntless heart, could have won from a field is a great tribute to Thoroughbred courage.
Perhaps Donoghue did not exaggerate when he said, "He was the bravest horse that ever lived."
