Backstory:
Freshly fallen snow clung to Shasta's soft fur as she continuing her long journey to find safety. She hadn't always been this alone, once belonging to a large herd that enhabited the mountain until one fateful day.

The playful nickers of a group of adventerous equids reverberated off the the trees as they ran along, leaping over fallen trees and rotting stumps. Upon leaping over a rather large boulder, she slipped on a patch of ice, sliding down the hill quickly. She landed with a loud thud in a small basin, her breath knocked from her lungs. After a moment she stood, her legs shaking beneath her from the effort as she lifted her head to peer above her, hearing nothing. For days, she struggled to get from the basin before she finally got out. When she raced back to her herd's territory they had been long gone. She followed their tracks until they faded into the fresh snow, causing her to diverge from the path.

Every night when she was curled into a tight ball, she lifted her head and nickered to the moon, hoping that one day she would hear a reply as they welcomed her back.
