What Wolf did you choose?
Azlyn Story;;
Azlyn had applied to every place she could think of. Bakeries, restaurants, and fast-food joints. She'd applied at colleges, in elementary school cafeterias, and even in high schools. She'd applied as a hair dresser, hair stylist, head cook, cook, chef, sous-chef, and chef assistant...but still, there was nothing. She was denied the position every place she tried. She was skilled and masterful at her craft - but none of the positions she was applying for needed any help at that point in time.
She was getting frustrated.
Unable to buy a bus ticket, she walked the few miles to her friend's house. She knocked on the door, feeling winded and tired.
Lola opened it, and classical music could be heard blasting from inside the house. Her little eyes lit up. "One minute!" she called back as she raced inside and turned of the stereo. "Sorry," Lola said, holding the door open, "I was practicing for my upcoming recital. This is such a surprise, Azzy!" Lola closed the door and hugged her friend. "I haven't seen you in weeks! I missed you. What's up?"
"I haven't gotten any of the jobs I've applied for. I'm...I'm really starting to wonder if I shouldn't just give up and take up your offer to live with you. I don't wanna be a moocher, Lola. You're a friend, and I love you, but...I don't want to take advantage of your success like that."
"Oh, well, I'm what everybody calls a 'protege.' My success is a gift from God - not of my own working. I can hear the notes in my head, and the music flows from my wrists and out from a violin. Yes, I do work to keep on top of my game, but I don't have to work as hard as you. I'd be happy to share my wealth with you." Lola hugged Azlyn again. "You're my best friend."
Azlyn smiled. "Could I stay the night? All my junk's back at the apartment, but...I don't have bus money, and had to sell my car to make the rent."
"I'll drive over and pick up your things. What do you want me to bring?"
"Everything. I'm moving in."
Lola's eyes lit up. "Thank you! I can't wait to have sleepovers every night with you!"
Azlyn smiled sadly. She was happy she had such a generous friend, but still upset that she couldn't even fend for herself.
Lola and Azlyn lived together for a few years - not as lovers, but as roommates. Azlyn grew to love and appreciate Lola as a friend all the more, and Lola grew to understand her best friend Azlyn a lot more than she'd known before. One day, Azlyn wanted to go to the beach. She looked over at Lola, intent on researching Beethoven on her laptop. "Lola...do you have enough money this month to maybe go to the beach? I know that you've been struggling, what with the recession and all...and that I STILL can't find a job...but...maybe...we could just do this one thing, and then call it quits for another couple months?"
Lola finished typing up her search, and hit enter. As she waited for her computer to process the request, she smiled and looked over at Azlyn. "Sure. I've been wanting to get off work for a bit, anyways. How about tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow would be great."
"And, it's your birthday, too! I can't wait to give you the gift I got for you."
Azlyn smiled sheepishly. "Aw, you didn't have to get me anything, really."
"You'll love it," Lola said with confidence. Shen then went back to typing.
The next day, they went down to the beach. After a fun day in the sun, Lola took Azlyn to see her gift. "Now, your gift can't be wrapped, Azzy, but I still got it for you. I'm afraid that it won't fit in the house, either...but...meh, you'll see."
"What, did you buy me an elephant?" Azlyn joked.
"No, it's something even better!"
Azlyn laughed.
Lola handed her a blindfold. "Put it on, and I'll lead you there."
Azlyn did as commanded. "Usually I'm the one taking you places, small-fry."
"Just because I'm short doesn't mean you're the one to do everything, Azzy."
Azlyn smiled, holding onto Lola's tiny shoulder as she padded alongside her.
They arrived a few seconds later. Lola climbed up on top of Azlyn's shoulders, and reached her paws around her head. "Ready?"
Azlyn nodded.
"Okay! Here's your birthday gift!" Lola ripped the blindfold off and leapt to the ground.
Azlyn stared in shock. "You...you bought me a boat?"
Lola laughed. "No, silly! Look at what's ON the boat."
Azlyn looked closer, and saw an RPW who was waving frantically. "So...do I go up there?"
"Sure. He won't leave his ship, after all." Lola smiled. "You want me to go with you?"
"I'd appreciate that, yeah."
Lola trotted forward. "C'mon, then!"
Azlyn followed, wondering what could possibly be on that ship that Lola had gotten her. When the boarded, they were both greeted by Captain Caspain. "Hello, Sir. My friend here tells me she has something for me on this ship?"
"She has recommended you for a job opening we have here. Well, actually, there are two job openings, but I have put your name in for both of them, Azlyn Cicada. Lola here has told me all about you, and how you're such a hard worker. Would you be interested in taking the positions?"
"Yes!" Azlyn said without missing a beat. "I mean, uh, of course, Sir."
"Very well," he said with a smile. He reached behind him and pulled out a chef's hat, placing it on her head. "You are now officially Chief Steward and Chief Cook of this ship. Welcome aboard, Azlyn."
Her eyes teared up as she looked down at her short friend. "Lola...you did this for me?"
"Happy birthday, bestie."
Azlyn reached down and hugged her friend as hard as she possibly could have. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

What Wolf did you choose?
Akay Story;
Akay rolled out of bed, yawning. She glanced at the clock, and muttered, "Four in the morning. Got four hours." She nodded, stumbling around the room, getting ready for the day. "Better sleep than I've gotten in weeks." She looked at her bush-babies, still wide awake - the males: Deka, Armani, and Cohagan; and the females: Chipo, Nnenia, and Carolyn. She patted each one on the head, and then fed them their dinner, each of them receiving two small, white bowls, one with food and one with water. The lined up and patiently waited for Akay to finish, and then the leapt forward and scarfed down the food. Akay smiled, walked over to the wall, and flipped the switch to slowly turn on the light. The lights were on a timer, and when she flipped the switch, it would be several minutes before they fully came on. This simulated the sunrise for her pets, and seeing as they were nocturnal, they needed to get some sleep in the daytime, now that Akay was awake and ready to start her day. She'd leave the light on all day until she got back to her quarters at night, when she'd flip the switch off and her pets would awaken. She'd spend some time with them and then go to bed herself. This was repeated every night for the few years she'd owned her pets, but after recently being called aboard the ship, she'd had to relocate the lights and all of her stuff to Caspian's boat. She didn't mind much, though. She'd needed the work, and would honestly take anything she could get - and she loved being on the move, and seeing new things, so what better place for her on the ship?
But she didn't really know where she belonged. The Captain reassured her that she'd find her place someday, but Akay was impatient. She wanted to know NOW. Captain Caspian recommended that she try out her paws at different positions around the ship from RPWs who were all ready solid in knowing what they wanted to do until she found her place. And that was why she was up so early.
"I'm headed down to the engine room. Oyster will be showing me how to work the ship today. Bye, my babies!" Aky smiled lovingly in their direction before turning, slinging her satchel over her shoulder, and racing out.
When she arrived in the engine room, Oyster was all ready covered in dust and soot. "Glad you finally arrived," he said, an exhausted lilt to his voice. "What took you so long? I've been in here for an hour all ready. C'mon. Get working."
Akay nodded meekly. She'd heard that Oyster was a sweet guy, and seeing as he was just a pup, his harshness shocked Akay. "Sorry, Sir." She set her satchel down and began to work alongside him.
Less than three hours later, she was kicked out of the engine room. She'd mistakenly pulled a lever that made the ship go too fast when it should have been going slowly, and Oyster, not mad at her but mad at her actions, told her she simply wasn't cut out for the job. As Akay walked to the kitchen, she thought to herself,
At least he was nicer about firing me than he was about me showing up late. She sighed. "Hopefully Azlyn doesn't have the same reaction," she said as she walked into the kitchen.
Azlyn was busy cooking and preparing breakfast for the crew. "You'd better be here to help, because if you're here to give me some bad news, just leave."
"Caspian told me I should help others on the ship until I find my place. You're next on my list to help."
"Good. Get on the apron and get cooking."
Akay leapt into action.
While Akay was good in the kitchen, she didn't cook as well as she took orders. Azlyn dismissed her at the end of the day, shaking her paw with a firm grip and a smile. "You were great today. I really appreciated having such good help. However, you're just not passionate enough about this job to do as well at it as you could. You need to find something more appropriate for you." Letting go, she turned and started cleaning up the kitchen. "Good luck finding your place, Akay."
"Thanks, Azzy," Akay said with a smile, returning the cooking materials and apron, grabbing her satchel, and heading back to her quarters.
After a week of trying all the positions on the ship and finding nothing that she fit with, Akay started to feel down in the dumps. "If I can't find my place, I can't stay here," she said sadly, staring at her sleeping bush-babies. She narrowed her eyes, suddenly intent on finding SOMETHING to do. She got up and walked down to the lowermost parts of the ship, past the engine room, past the armory, and past the rowing room. She found a different room she'd never stumbled upon before. She didn't know what the room was for, other than storage. As she looked around, she suddenly stepped in a wet puddle. She frowned. "The interior of the ship needs to be dry. Did something spill here?" She glanced about, and found an old towel. She dried up the water, and hung the towel up on one of the beams to dry. She bent down and put her paw in the same area, finding it wet once again! "There's a leak!" she said, suddenly very worried. Who on the ship could she ask about this? No one. No one was in charge of fixing leaks. Her eyes narrowed. "Well, I'm not doing anything important right now, so I'm going to fix this leak." She found some caulk, and caulked up the hole easily. Satisfied with her work, she dried up the lower area of the ship, and then looked further back in the crowded room just filled with materials and supplies. She found a rather large pile of roping, used for the mast and sails of the ship. When she touched them, they were wet! "These aren't supposed to be so soggy," she murmured. When she picked up a strand, it fell apart in her paws. "They must've gotten wet from that leak!" She picked up the large, sopping wet pile, drug them up the stairs, and threw them overboard. "They're of no use to us now." She then went back down to the same room and found materials to make the ropes. "Well," she said, thinking, "this can't be too hard. Since I tossed the others, I need to replace them."
Five hours later, she'd remade every rope that the ship had needed. She'd bought a book awhile back about knot-making, and she'd decided to practice her paws at that as well. At the end of the day, she went to sleep, content that, while no one knew what she'd done, she'd actually helped the ship in some small way.
The next morning, one of the holes where the sail was connected to the ship broke.
Akay was the only one around, other than the Captain, and she shimmied up the rope ladder without a moment's hesitation. She quickly affixed a new rope to the sail, and it was soon fluttering in the wind again.
Caspian stared up at her, the wind ruffling her white fur. A thoughtful look came over his face.
The next week, Akay looked after the youngsters of the ship - Thackary had just been born, and her parents were both crew-members aboard the ship, so they had jobs to get done. Akay was the babysitter, and she looked dutifully after Thackary, playing with her and keeping her from disturbing the other members of the crew.
The next morning, Akay was woken up by Azlyn. "Get up. Caspian wants to see you."
Akay was worried. The Captain had never called her out so publicly. She walked out of her quarters and into the sunlight to see the entire crew gathered around the captain. "You called me, Sir?"
"Yes. I wish to award your good deeds upon this ship. Firstly, know you will always be welcome here, and you will not be kicked off for any reasons other than dire ones."
Akay smiled. "Thank you, Sir."
"You show no fear, balancing and swinging so high in the air on the ropes, nor down in the lowermost regions of the ship, patching up the caulking of this vessel. You show great promise to go far in this life. You dutifully watch over the youngsters of this ship. For these reasons and more, I name you...Akay: Caulker, Ropemaker, and Yeoman of the Sheets. Serve your ship well, m'lady, and you will be welcomed by all who traverse the sea."
Akay stood tall with pride, saluted her captain, and smiled as her badge on a strong piece of rope was placed around her neck.
"Serve your crew and your captain just as well as you do this ship, Ropemaster."
"Yes, Captain." She responded, joy filling her every being.

What Wolf did you choose?
Thalassa Story;;
Thalassa was taking a break from working on Caspian's ship. He dove into the clear blue waters, quickly maneuvering in the water with ease. He loved the peacefulness of the waves. He knew he'd have to start his job soon, as navigator of the ship, but that could wait awhile. He needed to clear his mind.
His only child Thackary had recently had a birthday, and he'd celebrated it with her and her mother with glee. He adored his child, and wanted only the best for her. He also knew Caspian, and knew that the Captain would offer his daughter a position aboard the ship once she was old enough to work.
A splash to his left startled him.
His wife had jumped down after him.
He frowned in concern. Usually she was with the baby. If she was here...
He quickly motioned for her to come closer. "Is everything okay?"
She motioned back, unable to speak under the water as her husband could.
Your birthday is in three days, but I want to give you your gift now.Thalassa was confused, and said, "Let's get to the surface so you can explain this easier." He then swam up, holding his wife's paw, and they both reached the top of the waters. Thalassa and Année looked at each other.
Thalassa spoke first. "Why do you want to give me my gift early? And why aren't you with the baby?"
"Don't worry, dearest - Thackary is with Akay. She will look after the child for a short while, since I needed to speak with you."
"Well, what could be so important that you'd leave the child?" Thackary was legitimately concerned. "Are you sick?"
"No, no, no. I have good news. And...well, since your birthday is in three days, I'm sort of counting this as a birthday gift as well."
Thalassa relaxed. "All right, then. What's the news?"
She kissed his forehead. "We're going to have another baby soon!"
Thalassa was shocked. "Wait, what? You're...you're pregnant?!"
She nodded.
His entire face erupted in a smile. "You're serious? You're not pulling my tail?"
"Nope. It's the truth. Thackary will have a new baby brother or sister soon."
Thalassa hugged her tightly. "This is the best birthday gift ever!" he said, tears in his eyes.
