tomoko used to be a lot different compared to all that she is today. as a kit, she was very shy and fragile. she avoided confrontation like the plague, and always held herself back out of fear for the unknown. in fact it was this nervousness that gave way to her braiding habit, always messing with her mane the moment an obstacle appeared. she knew she had to stand up for herself, honestly she did.. but every time without fail she found herself backing away. she knew she needed to be brave, but she just didn't know how.
things continued like this, getting worse and worse for young tomoko. as her fear and anxiety grew, so did the size and number of injuries. she made herself an easy target, one the brutish bullies wouldn't ignore. one day though, someone came to her rescue. they were a transfer from another school in the area, and most people avoided them out of fear. yet, there they were defending her all by themselves all the while she sat there and cried.
they left immediately after the bullies were scared off, not so much as looking in her direction. from then on though, they always came to her rescue whenever they were around. and each time she went to find them to thank them, she was unable to catch them in time. soon enough the bullies stopped bothering her altogether, and later she heard that her savior had transferred schools again. she had never gotten to say thank you.

fast-forward a little ways into the future as she's walking down a random street, before suddenly hearing the sounds of a fight. peering into an alleyway, she was shocked to find that it was her savior, fighting by themselves against four assailants. she was scared, and she wanted to run away and yet... they hadn't ever run the other way when she was being attacked. they hadn't ever abandoned her when she needed them, even though they didn't even know her.
with a deep breath, she joined the fight, calling out 'duck (name)' before leaping over them and taking two of the assailants down with her by surprise. with her help, the fight turned in their favor and the thugs were sent packing. she was panting, exhausted and injured, yet she felt more alive than she ever did before. standing up to protect (name), she felt her anxiety quiet for the first time. it wouldn't be gone forever, and there would be times when she'd want to give in to her fear, but now she felt she knew how to combat it. it would take time, self care, and dedication, but the look on (name)'s face was more than enough. this feeling, this newfound confidence, was worth all the effort.
